video card question if someone can help

i just got a 9800gtx+ video card

i formatted my computer and when i try to install any drivers it shows that the video card is there but i only have 4bit video on my desktop which is worse then before i install the drivers and restart my computer (when i go to advanced video setting i don't have any video card options like temp display and other things that would happen when you get newer drivers) ive tried the drivers that come on the cd, newer ones and older ones

anyone have any ideas?

if the specs on my computer help i'll add that in too

Please post your complete specs. I'm A+ certified lol I'll try to help. What do you mean "formatted"?

Computer tip: NEVER use the drivers on the cd that comes with hardware lol more than likely they are older versions

Video cards will boot up in the standard 800X600 until you load up drivers and restart. Have you restarted since you installed the drivers?

ok my computers specs are

os: windows xp pro / 32
mb:epox nforce4 series (9npa3 ultra)
processor: amd athlon 64x2 4200+ 2.21 GHz
ram 1.00gb

if you need more let me know

when i say formatted i mean cleared eveything off (delete partition and put windows back on it)

yeah i tried using the ones on the disk and that didn't work so i found the newest ones out and got them from the nvidia site

yeah it starts up with the 800 x 600 and when i restarted it was the same but in 4bit color no option for 16 or 32 for the desktop and no advanced options for the video card itself

Hmm, give me some more specs, IE: psu size

Do you have any firewalls or any Nvidia based software installed? Is your bios set to disable the onboard video? Uninstall ANYTHING to do with motherboard drivers, video cards, nvidia software, firewalls. Start with the bare minimums and use this driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_180.48_whql.html

Looks to me like the driver thats been supplied is the wrong one, or the .inf doesn't match. Do as he says above, download the new Big Bang II's and install those. But uninstall any previous ones first.

im trying that stuff but nothing helped i know i called evga (the manufacturer of the card and they said send it back for another one when i explained what was happening) so i think i will try that

but would it have anything to do with the pci express 2.0 stuff?
i have the pci express x16 slot (thought they were all combatable)

i was looking for something to replace my 7900gt (to be better or about the same for not to much money) that died so if its a no go even with the new one i guess i could get something like a 8800gts for cheap

i got the 9800gts for not to much and with a free game so i went with it but i'll see what happens

I kinda had an issue like that. I ran driver cleaner and reinstalled and had no issues. Not sure on the error you get when you install though. Try a different version?

i formatted so i started with just windows

yeah i tried different versions but it didn't help
