venting about not getting there

Ok I just gotta vent...

I just put my red '86.5 back together after having the head off. I had diagnosed it's rattlin engine noise as valve clatter, so did the the guy at the Toyota dealer who was their "7m pro". Well, I jumped in and measured my clearances and turned out I needed some shims thicker than they make. And $8 a piece?! Fuck that. Next I took a shot at dumbass-shadetree-trick of the year. I cut off appropiate pieces of feeler gauge to stick between the shims and buckets. Viola! Clearances all good! Guess what, it didn't really work. Fired it up and as soon as it hit about 800rpm it spit a shim out and wedged the exhaust cam and died. Hmmm, my '87 Supra needs the head off for a head gasket anyway (that along the way I don't think was really the problem. I found loose timing belt tensioner and cam timing that was over 30 degrees off!) so I decided to just swap heads.
So today I get the 86.5 buttoned up and fire it up and sounds good. Until I rev it up a little. Exactly the same sound. (other than that runs better than used to) Must be all six rod bearings clatterin just a bit. Or piston slap. All the cylinder bores of that engine were super smooth. Not a trace of cross-hatching. Well hell. Figure I'll throw in my new carrier bearing and see how much Lucas Oil it needs to be quiet.
After I take apart my driveshaft and pull out the new carrierbearing it's wrong! Shaped all wrong to clear my bone stock exhaust. Thanks O'Reilley's. It's getting dark and I'm getting frustrated. I jack up the '87 to see if it's drive shaft is good and it's trashed as well.
So I'll have to drive my uninsured Grand Prix tomorrow and try to find a proper carrier bearing. Freakin ratted out Supras. I suppose that's what I get for buying a $700 car from a retard.

Oh yeah, don't ever try to shim your valvetrain with pieces of feeler gauges! It doesn't work!

here's some pics of my tormentor...

Dude...., that so freaking rocks.
I thought it was only I that had that kind of luck.
You just have to keep pushing forward. I think the only way I would have 2 supras is if they were the exact same year make. Same engine. Same everything.:bigun2:

Yeah bras rock! Actually, I'll be pulling that off as soon as it runs and I can drive it to the car wash. Extra weight and wind drag are not my thing.

As far as that cam lobe- didn't look like anything happened to it. I said 800rpm but it may have been slower, motor just stopped cold though. I am kind of concerned it could have put some twist in it or something but visually looks alright. I guess that shim was able to sort of teeter-totter on my crafty piece of feeler gauge and then slide over the side of the bucket. I heard these 7ms could do that if they reached valve float at high rpms, probably nastier then.

And a carrier bearing from Toyota is $214- and that's at discount rate! Jeez!

Carrier bearing....., 200 plus $. This is the reason mine is still stock.. I will never work on the drive shaft unless I have the money to replace the carrier bearing because in the past they have always had issues after being disconnected and then connected again.

Oh, I get it, but the lobes looked ok. Still smooth and not all galled up or ground down. The mech from the dealer was thinking the valves would have excessive carbon buildup not letting them seat all the way, like from burning oil. Which looks pretty much on track, valves looked like hell and entire intake was almost dripping with oil. This guy had jacked with some of the vacuum lines and I think that, along with some porno-quality blow-by, was helping the pcv tubes really suck in the oil. But that doesn't explain why my other head with decent clearances didn't completely clear up the noise. But the rod bearings do! (heh heh I said blow and suck heh)

Oh, and just so ya'll know, don't try and buy a $140 "Anchor" brand carrier bearing, pn 8588. It's for some different body type car, but listed as the proper one. Just checked another to make sure boxed correctly.

Autozone can get you carriers.

Any one of us could have told you that putting that feeler gauge under the shim and calling it good was a bad idea. Sorry it had to happen, but next time, ask!
