Ok I just gotta vent...
I just put my red '86.5 back together after having the head off. I had diagnosed it's rattlin engine noise as valve clatter, so did the the guy at the Toyota dealer who was their "7m pro". Well, I jumped in and measured my clearances and turned out I needed some shims thicker than they make. And $8 a piece?! Fuck that. Next I took a shot at dumbass-shadetree-trick of the year. I cut off appropiate pieces of feeler gauge to stick between the shims and buckets. Viola! Clearances all good! Guess what, it didn't really work. Fired it up and as soon as it hit about 800rpm it spit a shim out and wedged the exhaust cam and died. Hmmm, my '87 Supra needs the head off for a head gasket anyway (that along the way I don't think was really the problem. I found loose timing belt tensioner and cam timing that was over 30 degrees off!) so I decided to just swap heads.
So today I get the 86.5 buttoned up and fire it up and sounds good. Until I rev it up a little. Exactly the same sound. (other than that runs better than used to) Must be all six rod bearings clatterin just a bit. Or piston slap. All the cylinder bores of that engine were super smooth. Not a trace of cross-hatching. Well hell. Figure I'll throw in my new carrier bearing and see how much Lucas Oil it needs to be quiet.
After I take apart my driveshaft and pull out the new carrierbearing it's wrong! Shaped all wrong to clear my bone stock exhaust. Thanks O'Reilley's. It's getting dark and I'm getting frustrated. I jack up the '87 to see if it's drive shaft is good and it's trashed as well.
So I'll have to drive my uninsured Grand Prix tomorrow and try to find a proper carrier bearing. Freakin ratted out Supras. I suppose that's what I get for buying a $700 car from a retard.
Oh yeah, don't ever try to shim your valvetrain with pieces of feeler gauges! It doesn't work!
here's some pics of my tormentor...
