Hey all, Just wondering here.

When you First build a 7mgte Engine and you do the break-in time, Do you have or do you need to go in and recheck the valve shim clearances. Reason Im asking is that Ive started to Notice that my car is starting to clatter a good bit at around 1800rpms if I sitting with the gas pressed and held. When I drive it, It only clatters alot in 1st and 2nd... 3rd through 5th Gear you dont really hear it at all.

Another thing I have started to notice is that 1st through 3rd gear when I shift gears and hold down the clutch, I get a Small Backfire or pop from the Exhaust. It never did this until I started hearing the valve clattering. The motor has 8000 miles on it.

Can someone give me a solution for this or is this something that is Pretty common is 7MGTE engines. I dont feel Confortable driving it this way and I have a Shit load of Upgrade Parts that I want to install here soon.

If you rebuilt the head, and by that I mean had the valve seats cut, then yes you should re-check after driving awhile because the valves will take time to seat fully, and that may throw out your lash a bit. If you didn't recut the seats, then it might still be wise to check anyway because depending on where in the range you set them they could be out of spec lets say if you set them near the top of the limits.
example:
the range is 8-12 thousanths, and you set them to 10 or 11 or even 12, there's a higher chance it'll be out of spec than if you set it tighter.

There shouldnt be a reason to redo it, unless it wasnt done right the first time. That does happen though.

I come from a land down under
On a fresh valve job I allow an extra 2 thou on the clearances for the parts to settle in to each other, I figure it's better to allow this than have the valves close up by 2 thou and risk hanging one open and burning it down the track.

has anyone gone back through and remeasured them to see how much change there is in spacing say after 2k miles. say you set them all to 9 thousands when you redid all of the shims would there be much difference after they sit in and go thorugh enough heat cylces to jump past 10 or 11 thousands??

AJ: This is exactly why I add 2 thou when I build as whenever I've measured after breakin and a retorque it's closed up 2>3 thou. (you knew there had to be a reason I did it didn't you ;) )
