I've got some pieces that came with my head gasket kit. there is 24 of them so I assume they go around the valve. they have a lil spring around them to hold them tight to something. what are they, where do they go, and should they be replaced?

Those little 'helmets' are the valve guide seals. Use them if you are doing a valve job. Save them if not, as you may need them later. A set cost about $35. Dealer sells them separately for about $2.50 each.

By the sounds of it you shouldn't do a valve job :icon_razz
But simply, if your head is still fine, you could just replace the old seals with the new ones to prevent any leaks from occuring in the future, you don't have to do anything else to the head. To get them out/in you just have to take out the valves and take off the springs/seats/retainers. IF you wanted to use your feeler guage you COULD check your valve clearance for each of your 24 valves and see if they need new shims put on, but unless your head clicks or is otherweise in trouble, just the seals should be fine :icon_bigg . HO, and a good cleaning wouldn't hurt.

well I took 'er in for a P&P job and found a valve job to be a good idea as well (whatever that entails) and the tech asked for them. he recomended the job so I complied. said it was his 9th or so 7mgte so I felt pretty comfertable even though he doesn't have a flow bench he sounded like 15 years of experience was sufficent. I think all in all 425 for the head, in/ex man, and valve job. hope this shit is worth it cause I just got called out by a trust fund baby with a wrx.

that's all the information I have on it.... I doubt theres anything done to it. Last I remember this dude had an exhaust on a grandam thinking he's bad.... course I had an Si and thought the same. good friend of mine, just re-accuainted with him through myspace, "we'll have to put the WRX up against the Slowpra" I figure I'll walk 'em pretty bad..... I'd better, I've got no back seat.
