used turbo ???

hey all. i finally got my fresh motor in and put some miles on it. before it blew i had some smoking on decel, and i thought it was something in the motor. well, it's still doing it a bit, so i'm thinking it's the turbo now. i have a spare stock turbo that i can throw on, and i was wondering if there's any way to tell if it's good before i put it on.

On decel it probably it could very well be the turbo...

Before jumping straight to conclusion, did you do any tests to cancel out any other possible causes? Like a compression and leak down test? Check shaft play, check piping for oil, check downpipe for oil.


What exactly do you mean when you say "fresh"?

there was always a little oil in the intake side of the pipe. the motor that's in it now is fresh, but i didn't do a compression or leakdown test.

Fwiw, I will never put a used turbo on a car ever again. I've gone through 3. One of which was "freshly rebuilt" Its just not worth it.
