Has anyone had experience, positive/negative, with used 7MGTE motors from eBay and such. Seams like a cheap route to go. Buy the motor for $800-$900 shipped. Pull the head, resurface for MHG. replace valve stem seals, ARP studs, new oil pump, gaskets. I guess you could go as far as to replace the rod bolts and mains with ARP's and check the bearing clearances while the motor is out. Would be a fairly fresh motor for around $2000.

USED JDM: Positive experience. Installed head/main stud kits, HKS metal HG (stopper type), cleaned off the valves. Compression 170 psi across the board +/- 1 psi. Just dyno'ed at 399 rwhp @15 psi

CPT Furious, what was your total cost after all was said and done? I am only planning to be in the 375-425 hp range and was originally looking at getting a factory short block. Recently I have been thinking about refreshing a JDM, which should be good for years of "honorable service" for half the cost of a shortblock. I have over 216k on my current 7M (does have ARPs and MHG). I have been driving it hard to try to kill for a new heart transplant, but it just won't die :) I might just replace the valve stem seals and see how long this stubborn beast will last.

captain furious: did you rebuild the block or get it prepped for the MHG fully assembled?

heh, when i got mine, i literally re-torqued the headbolts, put on some new hoses, and dropped it in. though, i stayed at stock boost. then i blew my tranny, and decided to mod it a bit. so i pulled the motor, and put in a MHG, 1mm oversized valves, and cleaned everything up really well.

without making it a novel, inside looked very clean, very nice. another success story here.

would i recommend doing what i did? NO. no i wouldnt. you should do what i did as soon as you get it. it's good insurance. :)

88supraTT....it depends if you want the turbo, manifolds, etc. I don't need all the extra items, so there are sellers that sell just the longblock. If you get the whole ball of wax it is going to cost upwards of $1000 + shipping.

I actually bought my motor from a kid that got excited about Supras because he liked my car. He went out and bought a Supra with a blown motor (#3 cylinder intake valve broke...yikes!) and a used JDM motor. He ran out of time and money so I took the motor off his hands for $500 and sold the parts I didn't need for $600...so I got an engine and $100! :) Other than studs/HG, that's all we really did. The motor was beautiful on the inside and the bearings still looked fresh. I replaced most of the oil seals while it was apart, but that's pretty much it. Cleaned the valves and the two mating surfaces, but didn't lap the block or anything ( I might regret that later, though.)

My JDM experience is 95% success. Jowever, I did not drop it in and go, I did a full dissasembly, bearings, rings, hone, and deck resurface.

The water passages in the block at the HG were rotted out and became much larger. Some were even larger than the edge ring on a stock HG. I have never had trouble with water leakage on the MHG, but it still worries me.

Also, mine came without piston squirters.

this is the only way to do it

used is used and JDM, as has stated before, means JUNKYARD to them. If you put the motor in without replacing bearing and all that replaceable items while the engine is already is out screams of pure lazyness.

Easy killer! I didn't replace them purely because they were still looking brand-spankin' new. At least I pulled the sucker apart and inspected it. And yes, I knew it was a junkyard engine, which is why I disassembled it in the first place.
