So my 87 stuff is shot and to be honest I dont feel like replacing it with all the clips and access from behind etc. After some searching and looking at prices I'm seriously considering finding some universal stick on molding to fill the void.

Before I do it has anyone seen pictures of a car with universal molding on it? I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do it and have seen some interest but no one seems to follow through with it.

it'll look like shit, considering most of the molding is contoured to the body...

if you can pull it off though, it'll be interesting, but it's easier to find 89+ molding (made of plastic, no metal as in the 86.5-88 molding), and paint match it..

I did this on one of my Mk2s, back in the day, and it actually looked pretty damn fine. It was a bitch to get the edges but smoothly to match the angle of the doors, but other than that, it worked great.

I know that the 89+ molding is much better. Its just the matter of doing the replacement and the money involved. I was honestly thinking of removing it patching the holes and painting the inside valley from the molding with a black stripe against the white car.

Either way the molding isnt going to be the color of the car its gonna be black against white.

Plus I'm not talking about using some molding off another car. I'm talking about the universal stuff that comes in roles. I dont see how that wouldnt contour to the body.

Alright so I guess my laziness will make me the pioneer on this subject. I'm going to begin looking for the molding but just so you all know I'm about 1-2 months away from sending this car out for a maaco job so I'll be putting it on after that.

If anyone has suggestions on molding I'm open for it.

there are small flares. Narrow body (JDM 1G) Supras came with flat simple molding. But wide body (all other Supras, including USDM) Supras have a small bit of curve to the molding..

however, like I said, it'd be interesting to see if you can pull it off, and you may be the first to discover a viable alternative...

No chance... this was years before things like digital cameras and the internet. I don't think I even owned a film camera through most of that time.

Guess this is how you got that GRUMPY OLD MAN AWARD. HAHAHA. Not sure your age but im in the upper 30's. Though I do remember Oregon Trail in elementry. But internet was non-existant. Some of these guys don't remember 8-Tracks or hell even cassettes.

The molding on a MKII is very basic and isn't the main body line of the car like it is on the MKIII as well, making it far easier to get it to look decent.

what? sorry lol

He's talking about the MkII. That car doesn't have the recessed area for the moulding that our cars do. Makes it easier for the stick on moulding to look correct.
