Under dash re-bar removal

This is what mine looks like after years of sitting (close to a decade really):

Since I'm taking the car apart to inspect it for rust and find parts to replace, I want to get the bar bead blasted and paint (or get it powder coat it).

Is there something to put in its place while I'm painting it or can I just remove it, paint it and put it back in?

Mine looked like that as well when I removed my dash. As far as putting something in its place I wouldn't bother unless you are really doing something unusual. If your car is just sitting there I don't believe it will matter. I know it adds to the structure rigidity but its main job is to hold the dash and steering column. For mine I just wire wheeled it and painted it. Powder coating maybe over kill since you never see it, but its your dollar. For reference here is a shot of my car with it removed.

I used a sponge pad type of sanding block on mine this week.
Its just a powdery surface rust, after all. Then i painted mine with a spray can of metallic silver wheel paint
Why? Because it was a full can of paint that i was never gonna use on wheels, lol. Came out awesome.
