I bought a Supra about a month ago now with a freshly built 7mgte engine. .20 over with ross pistons...shot peened rods...headwork....etc. etc.

Was planning on monster build off of the engine but was smart and did a compression test before ordering any major go fast parts.

Cyl. 3 failed at 81...93 with oil in it to see if it was a ring problem.

I have a blown NA 2j laying around but I really wanted to go with the 7mgte platform.

What would you guys do...just bite the bullet and fix the 7m...bigger bore....larger pistons. Buy another built 7m block and put my head on it and have another useless block in the garage.

I am just kinda upset as I just got off the phone with the shop where the car is at so if this post is long winded and lacking direction I apologize.

Good point...like I said...this is my initial reaction to getting the phone call so I am just seeking info and some guidance.

Wait, please clarify...

You bought a Supra WITH a built motor? Or did you buy one, THEN build the motor? How many miles were on the build? What kind of head gasket does it have? Stock head bolts or ARP bolts/studs? What are they torqued down to?

Your post has a lot of holes in it... Obviously something went wrong, so lets try to find out what it could be before deserting the 7M...

If the compression only came up 12psi with oil in it, I would not be looking at a ring problem.

Look into the head/valves.

Sorry...like i said I sort of had diarhhea of the mouth after getting the bad news.

I bought the car with a freshly built engine in it. It has an HKS headgasket and ARP hardware. It is a .20 over bore already with Ross pistons. Shot peen rods. Head has a 3angle valve job and some porting.

My worst fear is one of 2 things....I didnt get the motor that was advertised...or the machine shop botched things up and this is the first sign of alot of trouble.

2turboZ: just a word of advice from someone who knows: NEVER EVER EVER EVER BUY A "BUILT" CAR EVER! *unless you personally helped build it or have actual time line reciepts for all the parts in the car* I paid $7500 for my car, it was SUPPOSE to have forged internals, P&P head, valves, this that and the other... The ONLY thing that was done to this $7500 car: metal hg and arp head bolts... THATS IT! When I tore my motor apart, it was all stock bottom end, it had never even been bored over, all stock head, no valve work, no P&P and as a matter of fact, the head had a CRACK in it... Needless to say I was mad, but what can ya do? Life lesson... Who can ya blame? The previous owner, the previous previous owner? Someone lied to someone somewhere...

You are obviously going to have to pull the head, theres no way around it... I think you'll answer 90% of your questions when you do that... I hope its nothing serious, but please keep us posted... You have any question, thats what we're here for...

In looking at the cost effectiveness of the mods I already have on the 7m and started over completely to move to the 2j I am gonna stick 7m.

The 2j will probably be for sale if anyone is interested feel free to shoot me a PM.

I come from a land down under
You can just about use ALL of the 7M electronics on the 2J it doesn't really care it's just a motor so this would keep costs down then it's just plumbing and you end up with a much more capable motor and none of the downsides to the 7M.

I love my 7M it's brilliant but a very tempremental beast that takes a LOT to make reliable, in hindsight I sould have just bought a 2J to begin with.

There aren't too many 7M's around that have had more time money care and attention poured into them then mine and trust me if I had to do it over it'd be bye bye 7M hello 2JZ ;)
thats why i think i will switch out to a ls1 eventually in my car. well not the same but you get the idea.
