Well, as many of you know I am in the middle of a 2J swap into my red 89 hard top. I haven't done much on it lately but I am finally underway now.

http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44436

My car is nearly mint but I have always wanted a black targa vs. my red hartop. I was looking online last night and found one in Tampa on Craig's list. It's a black 88 NA auto targa with grey interior!!!

Perfect, I can cannibalize my interior, 89 nose, spoiler, moldings, gauge cluster, A/C controller, 5 speed, etc over to the 88. Put a fresh coat of black paint, and I have my dream 2JZ black targa

I talk to the guy and he tells me it is a Florida car, no rust, never wrecked, but it needs paint (very oxidized and scorched by the Florida sun) and the interior is a bit worn. He is asking 1500 but will take 1200. Perfect!!!!

I drive this afternoon to Tampa and as soon as I got there, I knew I was in trouble.. The "guy" on Craig's list is a used car dealer. The car is very faded and the interior is not worn, it is worn out. Only plus is the dash is not cracked. Almost every other piece would have to be swapped. No biggie, I can work with that, the main thing is that it is a black targa  I look at the body close and I notice the right rear part of the targa is not seating properly. Yep, it looks like someone dropped it and bent it. I move my way to the rear hatch and remove the tire. Guess what I see..... my shoes!!!! The spare tire well has got severe cancer. Apparently I don't hide my facial expressions well because the guy can immediately tell I am severely pissed after driving three hours to see a big rust hole on a "rust free" car. The guy looks at me and says, "Oh, I didn't look in there...to me rust is the doors and fenders" Fricken idiot....... I then proceeded to ask him for a water hose. Yep, Niagara falls where the targa is bent :1zhelp:

I was so excited today with the thought of owning my dream car. My black targa 2J dreams have been dashed and shattered. Six hours, fifty bucks in gas, and one wasted meal at Taco Bell is all I mustered today. This is the second Supra I have gone to see that has been severly misrepresented :3d_frown:

Oh well, I still have a mint 89, so it is not a total loss.

I feel better now for venting :)

It's ok, don't fret. There will be others. Just be patient and it will turn up. I have done the same thing several times. I've driven to Austin from Fort Worth 3 times to only be disappointed by lying owners.

And what Johnathan said was dead on. Until you see it, you don't know.

Sorry to hear about that Chris, but like Johnathan said, you don't know if you don't at least check it out. Car salesman are usually pretty useless. They have a way of stretching the truth a bit.
Good luck finding your dream car. I'm sure if you're willing to drive three hours one way, you'll find one eventually. It seems like there is one for sale on here every day.

Yeah, it was worth the drive to find out. The payoff could have been grand. You win some, you loose some.

I have decided to just stay with mine. I love my car but the red is just too "flashy" for my taste. I got a great deal on it when I bought it from a coworker who has owned the car since 1990. I couldn't pass on the price he let me have it for. I have thought about a color change, but it is a lot of work to strip the car all the way down to do it right. I was hoping to find a midnight blue, grey, or black targa locally with a blown hg. Interior, paint, and motor condition did not matter. All I wanted was a straight body with no or very little rust.

I have been driving the Honda minivan for too long now. It takes a strong, confident man to drive a minvan daily :bigthumb: The looks, stares, and gasps at stoplights are not for the weak at heart.....lol

The swap must proceed ASAP Red hardtop FTW now :)

Yep, it was like this for me. I saw about 5 supras, 2 in Austin, TX. 3 in Dallas. All of them were crap. Then I found mine right here in Houston after giving up, it just popped up. :D

so am i the only one who would think it would be sac religious to butcher your already clean red car? Why not just paint that one?

I agree, it would be hard to part out my car.
