POLICE are investigating an incident in Melbourne in which a sportscar tailed another vehicle, before shots were fired and a man was stabbed in the hand.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the injured man was pursued until his vehicle, a Holden sedan, ran out of fuel at Taylor's Lakes, in the city's outer north-west.
"Police believe the incident began when a blue Holden sedan travelled along Goldsmith Avenue, towards Kings Road, about 2.40am (AEST) on Saturday," spokeswoman Sheree Argento said today.
"The car was tailgated by a distinctive metallic purple Toyota Supra ... which continued following the Holden, driving in a threatening manner and flashing its lights."
There were four men in the Toyota, described by police as aged in their 30s and of olive complexion.
There were also two passengers in the Holden.
Ms Argento said three shots were fired from the Toyota during the car chase, and one of the bullets smashed through the Holden's driver's side mirror.
The distressed Holden driver made a 000 emergency call but his car ran out of fuel before police arrived.
"The Toyota pulled up in front of the Holden and four people got out," Ms Argento said.
"One of the occupants was armed with a hand gun and another with a knife."
Ms Argento said the group of men threatened those in the Holden, before its driver was stabbed in the hand.
Police released a description of the "very distinctive" two-door sportscar involved in the incident. It also has chrome mag wheels and a sticker kit.
Any witnesses to the car chase, the assault, or anyone with information on the car's whereabouts are asked to contact
