One thing to watch your ass with is our lovely progressive tax system. You know the more you make, the higher percentage you pay...

Edit: I changed these to REAL dollar amounts so you can see I'm not making this up. This is not a worst case scenario. If you play with the numbers, the more "middle class" you are, the harder you get screwed. These are the real values based upon the 2006 Federal Tax Rate Schedules.

For example, you work one job, it pays $300 a week so they estimate that your $15,600 a year puts you in this tax bracket:

$755 plus 15% of the amount over 7,550.

so they take $37.75 a week out of that check. ($1207.50 + 755 / 52)

You work a second job for the same amount. The same $37.75 a week goes to uncle sam from that job.

Your combined salary ($31,200) however is however puts you in this tax bracket:

$4,220.00 plus 25% of the amount over 30,650

End of the year rolls around:

Job 1: $37.75 x 52 weeks = $1963 withholding held out of checks for job 1.
Job 2: $37.75 x 52 weeks = $1963 withholding held out of checks for job 2.

Total held out of your paychecks = $3926

However, when you do your taxes, due to your combined salary, you are in a higher tax bracket (you evil rich motherfucker you...). Total withholding should have been $4375.50

Guess what sparky? You owe the IRS a check for $449.50 on April 15th!

Lots of people trying very hard to work their way up get fucked like this every single year.

http://www.fairtax.org folks...

Remember that the Bush tax cuts expire on Dec 31, 2009 - at that point, the amounts go up dramatically...

My main job schedule is 24 hours on and 48 hours off so I only work every third day, which leaves me two days to do whatever I want. I fly part time for a fixed wing air ambulance company out of Fort Worth. I just give them the days I'm not at my regular job. I maybe fly once or twice in a two week period and that job pays for the supra. I cash the checks and spend on my car. I claim 0 and withhold at a higher single rate with that job. Since we have two deductions (children) we have not had to pay any extra taxes since 1995.

I'll use small even numbers for simplicity's sake, but you'll get the point:

For example, you work one job, it pays $200 a week so they estimate that your $10K a year puts you in a 10% bracket so they take $20 a week out of that check.

You work a second job, also at $200 a week, so they also take $20 a week out of that check.

Your combined salary of over $20K a year however puts you in a 15% bracket.

End of the year rolls around:

Job 1: $20 x 52 weeks = $1040 withholding held out of checks for job 1.
Job 2: $20 x 52 weeks = $1040 withholding held out of checks for job 2.

Total held out of your paychecks = $2080

However, when you do your taxes, due to your combined salary, you are in a higher tax bracket (you evil rich motherfucker you...). Total withholding should have been $3120.

Guess what sparky? You owe the IRS a check for $1040 on April 15th!

Lots of people trying very hard to work their way up get fucked like this every single year.

That is so unfortunately true for a lot of people.

I was "Home schooled" In highschool so I got used to working two jobs, Chick-fil-a and K*B Toys, Both at the local Mall. Chick-fil-a got super gay after about a year and half so I quit that, was working only at K*B's for a while then got a job with a catering service which I only did like every other weekend but it payed really well, got another job at Cafe Caturra, Was working all three till about 6 months into the Cafe, they opened another location, So I quit K*B's to work at both locations of Cafe Caturra for two years till the owner fired me last week for absolutely NO reason. Through all this time I was still doing some catering, Just started driving parts for Bap Geon, and I think I'm starting next week at Jim Price Chevrolet as an apprentice.

Cliff's Notes: I'm used to working 2 or 3 jobs at a time.

I work part-time at Waldenbooks (a dream job for my inner bookworm), as well as for a company called STOPS, Inc. I drive people to and from doctors appointments, lawyers appointments, and physical therapy, elderly and Workers' Comp cases, mostly. It's not a great job, but it pays pretty good money while I'm in college. :) I will also be called on to do some American Sign Language translation through STOPS, depending on the need for it.

I worked 3 jobs whilst at university... I managed 2 medical centres, as well as worked at the local cinema.

I also volunteered for the dance club at the university and taught a couple classes.

After 6 months, I got very sick due to being so tired, and was laid up in bed for 4 weeks.

Three jobs here if you count the money I get from my GI Bill to go to school full time, plus my part-time job delivering pizza's for Dominoes (~ $9/hour taxed, the rest is under the table), plus the money I will be getting monthly for being a disabled veteran.

Last year when I was still in the Marines I also worked ~20 hours a week, came home with about $2000 a month after taxes before paying my bills. Granted my only bills were insurance, car payment, cell phone, internet, and 2 credit cards.
