because it will shit on your world. jk but i have a 7m with turbo back exhaust, 550cc injectors, lex afm and manual boosty controller set at 14psi. well my manual boost controller which was tight decided to back out and fall out so when i boosted it just rocketed up and away to 21ish psi of boost(87 ocatne gas) before nailing fuel cut followed by smoke on decel from then on. after about 20 miles of smoke(fresh rebuilt engine btw) i pull her out before bad stuff happens. turns out number 3 cylinder piston cracked between the rings and on the inside. sorry for the shitty pics but anyway :: angry ::
cast pistons ftl! jk

dam that sucks. you really should be running higher octane fuel man. i doubt it would have mattered here tho.

usually about 30 more in cali. 89 is 10 more than 87 and then 91 is 20 more than 89 at chevron and shell. some of the cheap places are just 10 more than 89.

Running 87 in a modded turbo car has never made sense to me. Wait till you have a long pull up a moderately steep grade at part throttle. It's just one more avenue for failure and I don't want to be worried about it.

Considering 87 what Toyota calls for on a STOCK turbo, which high octane recommended for max performance there is no way I'd push more boost on 87 when it's $4.50 more a fill-up to run the good stuff (if that).

Never run less than 92 octane (higher is better, but don't go all race gas, just simple premium) in a turbo motor. There's a reason the manufacturer says to use premium only. It helps reduce detonation and will save you from frying your rings.

As for the cost of premium being too expensive, are you really that cheap??? From bone empty to full (16.5 gallons) at $.30 more per gallon than regular you're paying only $4.95 extra. At 20 MPG at 15k miles per year you're only spending an extra $225 ($18.75 per month) on gas that's required for your car. If you can't afford the $225 per year then you need to sell your Supra and buy something different. These aren't cheap cars to own, especially the turbo ones.

93 is all Ive ever used in any highperformance car or boat that my family has owned. I have electronic boost controller that I leave set at stock unless I have time to tune it to the conditions outside. Why would you spend so much money on building your motor to cheap out and blow it up in the end? Do you use the cheapest motor oil also? Sorry for you loss man. Hope you dont have to remachine anything.

Cast pistons were not your problem. Not at all.

Now cheaping out on a decent boost controller...well, I guess now you know, stick with EBC's.

Having personally seen every time I drive just how much boost fluctuates with temperature change alone, i will NEVER run a manual controller...EVER.

EDIT: didn't see that 'jk'. Ill keep my comment in place for others though :)

Yeah running 87 is asking for trouble. like poodles said if its 30 cents/gal more then 15 gallon fillup is only going to cost you $4.50 more. No matter how much gas may go up, the difference between 87 and 93 is usually only 20-30 cents/gal. If 5 bucks more at the pump is gonna break the bank, its time to buy an old civic and call it a day.

So much truth above.^^^^

On a side note "Winter Blend Fuel" gives you less mileage or it has less energy. It makes me wonder if that just makes matters worse when using low octane fuel.

im just gonna point something out here (correct me if im wrong OP)....you were running fuel and air mods with a lot more additional boost than normal without any form of tuning or wideband to watch what you were doing? lucky it was only one piston and not everything in your engine IMHO
