so, i started my jdm motor for the first time last night, and i noticed smoke coming from the turbo, not instantly, but it came a bit later once it got warmed up... now, the smoke did not smell like burning oil, so i'm wondering if my turbo wrap is making the smoke... anyone have any experience w/ this happening?... really don't wanna take the turbo off :-/

Anytime you work on the motor you leave greasy or just human oils on your turbo/manifold. That will cause a some smoke to appear once the exhaust heats up. Exhaust wrap is notorious for doing this as well. When I first installed wrap on my N/A's Pacesetter header it smoked like someone threw a smoke bomb in my engine bay. It smoked a good 15-20 minutes even while I was driving it to warm it up. Next time I drove it, no smoke. If it keeps happening then you've got a problem, otherwise you're good to go.

wonder if you can avoid this by using those gloves I've seen people use more often on TV shows, like blue surgical gloves?

I know when I swap turbos or exhausts I always have some smoke from the grease/oil I got on during installation.

You'll still get car grease and oil transfers, just no human oils. Best thing to do is just keep the engine bay clean and clean all parts as you remove them. Most of the exhaust wraps will smoke regardless. It doesn't hurt anything except your pride.
