Hello all,

I am in the process of trying to rebuild (90 Turbo) what used to be a running car in my garage. As far as the turbo/manifold goes, I have 2 CT26's that both need rebuild. One is not so bad, but leaks oil, the other needs a hug. I am looking at manifolds and new turbos, but am not sure if it is worth it to buy the new manifold and turbo kit versus just getting one of the CT26's trimmed out from MDC and keep the stock exhaust manifold. I am building for power, but only about 400hp tops. I am doing the Lexus MAF, injectors, SAFC etc... and already have a (test) downpipe +full custom made exhaust (no cats flowmaster muffler).

Will one of these kits off egay be worth the money?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUPR...tegoryZ33742QQihZ020QQitemZ300084818543QQrdZ1

I look at the manifold and think that it will come apart quick without any kind of support and the weight of the turbo.

Advice?

You know there are turbos that will bolt up to the stock manifold such as the JT, Boss, Sp series turbos.

i think a JT56 will suit you well for your power needs. You can use your aftermarker 3' DP as well. i think im going with the JT61:evil2:
IF you dont wanna kill $1250+, just upgrade the ct26 to a 57 trim its good around 350+hp.

Ebay performance FTL IMO.:3d_frown:
Except intercoolers.

I guess it would be a decent buy if you took the turbo as soon as you got it and shipped it to MDC to have him clean out the walnut shells in it and to put better internals into it.

It just seems kinda odd replacing the turbo and possibly the turbo elbow, and not the exhaust manifold which is typically where you have alot of restriction. I am looking for a solid setup that is reliable. I am building the crap out of the block with all new/machined internals, along with getting the block/head decked and matched for the MHG. I don't want to deal in garbage.

the stock manifold isnt that restrictive and has been proven to flow a good amount of hp. your goals are right in line with me so i suggest checking out the jt61gt. awesome boltup turbo! drop me a pm if ya would like to know more.

and for the guys that say get the mani, yes it will be less restrictive than the stocker but after everything else ya need to do it not too hard to just get a bolt on turbo and still make power.

The turbo elbow is where there is a lot of restriction and heat.

The stock manifold can easily make 500+hp, if you port it out there will be gains.

there are plenty of bolt-on solutions that will get you that number (even on pump gas). regardless of what you choose (SP, BOSS, JT, CT26, older Greddy or HKS) make sure to replace the turbo elbow. The first 4 I listed use the same elbow (greddy has its own, don't recall the HKS off the top of my head - good luck at finding one for sale anyway). So if you started with a CT and upgraded later, you could use the same exhaust set-up. A full 3" elbow makes a huge difference on even a stock CT. Don't skimp on that part. (nor fuel, but that is a different thread).

an integrated DP would also work. the only bitch is when you need to drop the downpipe you have to unbolt it from the back of the turbo - not to mention some of those nuts can be a PITA. with the separate elbow, 3 nuts and pull down. either would work fine.

here is a pretty sweet elbow for sale

^That will last too, Jdub is the man when it comes to ceramic coating shit (check out my profile for a list of parts I've had him do so far... Probably forgetting a few in it too).

Or you can just buy a DP that has an intergrated elbow.
The elbow is welded to it instead of bolted on.
BIC FTW

I have a brand new DP I was testing b4 all hell broke loose. Not sure about it though. Its one of those Megan Racing units, was only $170 shipped.

I am looking at the elbows. I do need to get the elbow ceramic'd, I was also thinking after I get the stock manifold ported, I would get that done as well.

I don't know how anyone can even think about putting one of these motors together for under $5K. I am doing all the prep/build minus decking/matching the block/head. I figure it's worth it to do it right though.

IIRC the megan DP is 2.5" where it connects to the turbo elbow and expands 3" after the flex section. An aftermarket elbow (like suprasport's elbow, I think it's stainless) is 3" where it bolts onto the DP, so you WILL have a small bottleneck right there. You may want to consider finding a different DP or an integrated one with the elbow, but you will still have a considerable increase in power over what was stock ;).

Mike Malloy made 543rwhp on the stock manifold. :)

I'd look into BIC's 3" downpipe, myself. Or a DDP, if you want to truly max out your exhaust flow.

I'm running a 57trim CT26 @ 16psi right now, and holy hell is it fun!

This is the pipe I bought:

I was thinking of going with the aformentioned DDP. I have never heard one in person, but have heard them in vids. They sound kind of nasty, but it could have been to vid.

One of the things I like about this car is power options are available, but they are all dependant on your wallet. I have come to grips with this project being expensive as hell, but want to make the right choices.

What kind of power are you making with that CT26?

A DDP is loud as hell when the waste gate is open. If you don't like the harshness of it, either get a recir. DDP or something like this: http://www.cooleeze.com/browse.php

The black megamouth DP is what I have ;).

That's the first time I have seen that one.

The elbow is built into the DP.. Nice!!! I like it.

I believe that will be my purchase, costs less than a new elbow and true 3" DP. I don't think I wanna go DDP on my build, too harsh like you said.

This brings me to another question, about the intercooler and piping. I have read much banter on this forum about the stocker being fine with a new hardpipe kit versus a new kit ie. spearco, whatddayathink?
