Ok, I tried searching for something on this but I didn't find anything that helped. I just bought an MKIII about a week ago, but I'm at school now so I can't really work on it until christmas break. So I'm buying restoration parts and what not now and I need some help in the exhaust department. The exhaust on there now looks pretty darn close to the stock one from way back in the day as it's rusting out and dying, so I want to replace it. It's an NA MKIII as of now, but I plan on going Turbo in the next few months. I want to just buy one of the 3 inch cat back systems now so I'm not wasting money on buying a new system when I swap out the GE. So is this a bad idea? What kind of powerloss can I expect with having one on an NA? Thanks in advance.

You probably won't notice the difference. The 7MGE motor is a high RPM motor. It has no low end torque to speak of.
I got a HKS 65mm sport exhaust for my NA. I didn't notice any difference.
But then again I think its still pretty restrictive.

But when I went to 7MGTE, I got a 85mm HKS. I'm not sure what it is, it could be a one-off HKS, because its a NA exhaust and I don't see that HKS made a 85mm NA exhaust.
You should be careful. On my '87, the catalytic converter has a 1 inch length difference on NA and turbos for some reason. So when you decide on an exhaust, I'd get an exhaust for a turbo and get a catalytic converter, or test pipe, to match. The front end of the catalytic converter for a NA or turbo is the same. That is to say the end of the NA exhaust manifold and the end of the Turbo down pipe is the same.

Get the HKS 75mm exhaust and Summitracing.com has 3" high flow catalytic converters for $80 made by Catco. The catalytic converter is nothing fancy but it works.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I was actually thinking about the HKS so I may go for it, I'm gonna check out a couple other ones though. But thanks again.
