Turbo/Auto???

how many guys are running gte's w/ an auto tranny? the reason i'm asking is because i got an '88 N/A for free and my buddy wants to put a gte in it and he wants to know how good is the auto do and if it's close, as far as power capabilities as the 5-speed.

i know that he'll have to get the ecu and harness but just curious on this! thanks

wouldnt run the auto ge tranny with the gte motor. it wouldnt handle much power. the auto gte tranny will handle just a tad bit more.

I've got one and so far so good after a rebuild about 1 1/2 ago with all the good stuff, higher stall, a bf trans cooler, and some mods from sf courtesy of jared, currently running about 400

iirc the non turbo auto tranny has less clutch packs in it then the turbo tranny. or 1 less. i cant remember.

You are correct. And there are small differences in the 91 and newer to better handle the power also. If you don't know where the trans came from, assume it came from a Cressida and you dont want it.

edit: I have a factory GTE with the A340E. 120k, and no problems.

I find an auto behind my gte enjoyable. But I also find that my other supra with a 5 speed is more "fun" to drive. The auto does well if taken care of and not abused. Its how you drive it everyday on the steet that will determine how long it will last. Read the thread "how to make your a340 last". " It will tell you many things that you can do on your own. If your serious about using the auto, just ask for more help and it will be given. Good Luck.
