trouble getting into reverse

hi sometimes when im driving the car hav a hard time of getting into reverse. i have a 5 spd. when i push the clutch all the way down and try to put the shifter into reverse, the gear grids a little. but going into first or any other gear is fine. does this mean i gotta get a new clutch soon?

Just means you're not used to the R154 transmission. It's a simple fix sir: before shifting into reverse, shift into any other gear, THEN slide into reverse. Shouldn't grind at all if you do it quickly enough. Doesn't have to be super-quick, but an R154 grinding into reverse without doing the trick above, that's just how they are. :)

The R154 uses a simple gear for reverse without a synchro. So when you are trying to get into reverse, you are actually meshing two gears without the aid of a synchro.

What makes it easier is what is posted above my post. Put it into any other gear, I use first, then let the car move forward a bit and then put it into reverse.

Ah, so everyones does this :p Anyway, just keep at it, You'll get the "feel" for it, as of now I can Shift into reverse without using the other gear trick and theres no grind, it just takes time to get used to... Though I always wandered if using High end gear oil would help at all.

No need to go into another gear, just wait a few seconds then try reverse. The gear packs have to stop spinning as reverse isn't syncronized.

High end gear oil tends to make it worse as the gearpack will spin longer. Should still use better gear lube (redline MT-90) if you like the other 5 gears :)

i use lucas 75-90 full synthetic, it never shifted so nicely until now

Contains friction modifier. While it's needed for clutch type limited slip diffs (like ours), it impedes the function of the syncros in a transmission. Try shifting fast ;)

Could you elaborate on this technique? If I slip into reverse quickly, usually the worst I get is a little 'notch' sound, but I'm curious how you do it without grinding without shifting into a different gear first...

Thats your problem. If you push the clutch in and wait, then put it into reverse, it shouldn't grind. Just need to either wait for the input/countershaft to stop spinning or you can put it into a different gear first to force it to stop spinning.

Thanks for clearing that up Cy, I'll give it a shot tonight leaving work. Never really gave it much thought or bothered to learn what makes a transmission do what it does beyond the basics. :)
