Figured it's about time I made one of these, I've had the car for well over a year now. Originally purchased in summer of 2010, I drove it for about two weeks and then tore it apart and started fixing/modifying it.
Here's the car when I originally got it -
The body on the car is what really motivated me to buy it, one of the cleanest MkIII's I've ever come across. It was in roughish shape mechanically, but after $2700 of steering and suspension work, new exhaust gasket and helicoiled studs, it was well on its way.
Shortly after that work was done, I put a boost controller in and tried to run 12psi on the stock ct26. I blew apart almost every single intercooler pipe and then the turbo started blowing oil, the car needed some serious work, so I purchased an HKS intercooler kit, and got ready to install a gt35r.
Here's the manifold with an adapter plate small enough to finally let my upper ic pipe clear -
And here's what the turbo looked like mocked up in the car -
After I got the car to this point, I realized there was absolutely zero chance of the oil lines clearing so in an effort to actually drive the car at some point this year, I opted for a different, more manageable turbo. This was a really big piss off because I was really looking forward to the gt35r but hey! I also had a spare 57 trim ct26 in the shop that needed a rebuild, so I dropped it off at Alamo industries, and two days later I wound up with a brand new, slick as hell looking 60-1 upgrade in the turbo!
Turbo before rebuild -
Turbo after rebuild, side by side to a stock ct26 -
RC 550's and a lex afm were installed next -
And shortly after I started on the HKS intercooler kit, this should have went nice and smooth but I had no instructions, and was missing all the brackets from the kit. After playing jigsaw puzzle for a good while, and receiving a helpful email from mstgeer on supramania (thanks again!) my dad and I fabbed up some brackets and mounted the intercooler -
I forgot to take a pic after, but the custom brackets also allowed it to sit nice and straight, instead of on a weird angle like most of the HKS kits I've seen.
Also prior to installing the IC, I found a TON of rust behind the bumper from an exploded battery. After a good while of grinding and sanding and painting I fixed it up and got it looking fresh again
Ended up painting the entire thing flat black, but forgot a pic again -
Finally after all this BS, all the little things were ready to go in, this included an Apexi SAFC II, Innovate wideband, and a few other little goodies to get things running a bit more proper. A year and a half later, the car is good to go!
Fresh after a quick wash and wax -
Finally got the chance to take the car down to the track last night, running 15psi of boost with my afr's around 10.5 I pulled a 13.66 for my first pass. I was super disappointed with that run, but hey, first time EVER launching the car and my 60ft was a 2.490. Definitely need to invest in some slicks! After that I had a really good launch, and felt really good going down the track against a 11' Camaro SS, unfortunately when I went to pick up my slip the guy told me the time machine broke so they had no idea what I ran. FML. I also happened to notice my downshifts were feeling pretty damn weird and the car overheated, so that put a quick end to my racing fun. After getting the car home I found a hairline crack in my radiator, and a jacked up carrier bearing on the driveshaft. Just ordered the new bearing from Toyota and it came with a free keychain, lol thanks again Jeff, and now I guess I need to find a solution for my rad issue.... So the car is parked again for a bit till I get everything sorted out, but I also just ordered a Blitz Nur Spec exhaust, radiator hardpipe kit, and a Shine front lip, can't wait till all that arrives! I guess in the meantime here's a complete mod list of the car and a few more pics, sorry if I rambled a bit but hey! This is my timeline I guess for the car and the only real way I'll remember everything that's gone on. Enjoy!
