So im in the middle of a 5spd swap and I just picked up my R154 yesterday. I got it at a parts yard in north jersey about two hours from my house. My question is should I take the transmission to a shop and have it checked out before I install it? The guy I bought it from said that it came out of a running car and had no problembs, but I dont wanna go through the swap to find out that the trans is not in great shape...If I did take it to a shop what could they do and what kind of price am I looking at? sorry about the long post, and thanks for your replies.

Might as well since its out. If you put it in and it has problems you will end up taking it out again.

While it's out would be a good time to upgrade anything too, like the flywheel or clutch.

Yea I was gonna go with a new stock clutch and light weight flywheel...I dont plan on using an upgraded clutch because I dont plan to do many mods to the car.

replace as many seals as you can while it is out,
give the whole transmission an overhaul while you still can, new synchros and bushings wherever you can. beyond that depending on your hp goals you shouldnt need much more other than some synchromesh fluid.

I would pin the input shaft back and forward and feel for roughness or noises. I would also engage the gears while turning the input shaft. If everything seems smooth I'd say it's ok to put in. If you go drive it and find the synchros are bad or something then no big deal. Pull the transmission and rebuild it.
