Okay, so today I was driving on the freeway when i literary felt all power stop and my gauges began to flicker like the car was turning off and on:1zhelp:. So i pulled off to the right and my car shut off. I started it again and tried putting it into drive and it would kill itself again, then i put it in neutral and started the car and then i heard this terrible grinding noise that might be coming from the bell housing area:cry:. Yet at the same time I'm freaking out because I notice that I can start my car while it is in Drive or any other gear including reverse:nono:.

When I got the car towed back home, I went through some common sense trouble shooting checked wiring just to be sure, not throwing codes that I can see (No flashing O/D or Engine lights),

The transmission will be fine when in park, the second you move the selector to (D) it dies. Ok so I start it from park again and move it to reverse PERFECT no problem at all. Same thing with !st gear and 2nd gear. When the selector is moved into (N) it makes a fairly loud grinding noise. The last weird thing, The car from Park to Drive will just kill it, but it I start it with the selector already in Drive it makes the same grinding sound as if in neutral. Before today the car would never start unless in Park or Neutral weird..... Thanks everyone All help Is appreciated.

If the car does turn off when the key is in the on position, then the lights will stay on. Unless you have an electrical problem like the battery cables are loose or bad. Or maybe you beat on the cable to make it fit on the battery, thereby ruining the battery and breaking plates inside.

I wouldn't have pulled my car off, I would have tried to get home or to a repair shop. Next time...

The starter is in the bellhousing area. Are the starter bolts looose and grinding from misalignment with the flexplate? Are the wires loose causing your electrical problem? The battery is hardwired to the starter in addition to switched power.

Neutral start is short electrically, you have to find out why. Or pay somebody competent to do it.

If the MIL isn't flashing at all, they you didn't jump the correct pins of TE1 and E1.

Based on your writing, I consider this a different issue, even though it might be the same. Because you said it acted like it was stalling. Maybe your grinding is because it isn't in drive, but park and the range selector is off and out of alignment.

We took the engine apart and took the starter to an Autoslown and the test was inconclusive. The machine wouldnt test it. So hopefully we can just change starters. Are Turbo and Non-Turbo starters the same?

It was the Headlamp Fluid was low..... Just messing it turned out to be that the starter went out at the same time my neutral saftey switch went out. I know this because when we installed a new started the symtoms were the same as before. Finally, we replaced the neutral safety switch and it ran like a champ... no grinds anymore, the transmission didn't know what gear or where the selector was at.

Fascinating. The NSW caused a grinding noise?

I wonder if the failed switch was also failed/hacked wiring and he just didn't mention it. Like the pinion and motor were being engaged while running.

Sometimes shops fix things without telling you and don't charge. Like wires in the wrong place. If it only takes a moment to put it back, they might have done that.
