I am installing a LIPP cast stainless turbo elbow with a 3 inch opening and a full 3 inch downpipe. The od of flange for the downpipe is about 1/2 " larger than the elbow's od. This leaves about 5/32" of the flange for the gasket sealing surface NOT including the flanged part of the piping that comes thru the downpipe mounting flange which is about 1/4" or so.

With that said is this enough of a sealing surface to hold up? The high flow cat's flange is about 1/4" also.

Next, the factory exhaust bracket that bolts to the tranny makes the downpipe up too close to the floorboard and too far outward. Should I modify this bracket or remove it altogether?

The sealing surface size should be fine. I run the same elbow with an RT downpipe. The inside of the exhaust system post-turbo shouldn't be holding a lot of pressure.

I don't have the problem with the hanger on the transmission, but my downpipe has nothing that connects to it, it's just the hangers on the main exhaust, which are all fine, so I can't help you there. Just remember that it all has to connect together all the way to the tailpipe, so you probably can't move the cat too far.

My car has California emissions so maybe that's why it has the bracket? I don't recall the manufacturer of the downpipe. It has a sort of corrugated flex section kinda line those you see on an 18 wheeler exhaust. Thanks for your help! One last thing. Did you use the factory mounts?

Mine has the bracket, but I don't have anything on my downpipe that connects to it so I don't use it.

What I have is the LIPP elbow, the RT downpipe, and the Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust system. The exhaust uses the factory mounts for the rear at the midpipe location where the resonator is, and both of the hangars for the front and rear of the muffler. As far as I'm, aware, that's all of them except for the one hanger at the transmission where the 2nd cat would be on the factory exhaust. My downpipe is the "racing" one, which has neither the provision for the cat, nor does it have a hangar to use that.
