Ok, my clutch master cylinder died, fourty miles from home. So, I drove the car home clutchless shifting because I had no other option. I replaced with a new clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, and put my SS braided clutch line on that I bought a few months ago.

Got it all bled out and adjusted the way I wanted it. Now, all of the gears work great, except first :(

SOMETIMES, but not always, when I put it in first(all the way in) it just grinds or pops out when I let out on the clutch... Other times it goes in fine and stays there.... If I am in second, slow down to 3-5 mph and put it in first it usually goes, but from a stop, most of the time it won't go in first.

Is this the dreaded R154 thrust washer problem?

Can someone provide me diagrams of trans internals and what to look for?

Any ideas on something this could be that doesn't require me to pull the trans again?

1st gear syncro??? or 'dog ears'???
I've had some chevy's with that problem. Once I got them apart, I found worn out syncro's and other items.

What he said.

And those brass rings have pointed edges with an indentation on top to hold the trans in the gear you have selected. When you grind a lot, that is the noise you hear. Not the gears, but the clutching teeth. So when grind, they get rounded, and the trans will pop out of gear. The teeth and brass rings, or carbon fiber rings, depending on the trans, are the "syncros".
