It is not too bad man. What trans do you have? Just make sure you take it slow and be organized. I beleive there is a write up on here somewhere.
Also make sure you have a bunch of extensions for the bell housing bolts. Its easiest to undo the trans mount and jack up the front of the motor and get the bolts from the back with the extensions. Also if it is the turbo trans make sure to pay close attention to how the throw out, pp etc goes together.

Tranny knocking? I assume its a R154(turbo 5-speed). I've never heard of a tranny knocking. You can easly trouble shoot it. If it knocks when you rev it and when your driving then its not your trans.

My w58 was shot and it had a loud tapping noise that sound like a rod knock. It got loud as my rpm's raised even when i was parked or moving. However the sound went away when i pressed the clutch pedal down......

If it sounds like a hammer knock the bottom end then i bet its the tranny i know the sound you are refering to when the bearings have gone bad but its no where close to same level of noise.

I had replaced both pilot bearing and throw out bearings twice ..... The ones i had on there had less that 15,000 miles because i upraded my clutch to a 6 puck and upgraded to a heavy duty pressure plate all for the w58.

I pulled the tranny i put brand new ones in after I heard the noise. I actually called bigaaron to let him hear the noise while I was driving and he was like "thats way more than simple grinding that tranny is shot"

-Drop the exhaust
-Drop the drive shaft center support (leave it connected to the diff)
-Drop the tranny support
-Lift the engine up from the harmonic balancer (you dont have too but it makes it easier to get the two top bolts)
-You have to take down the inspections covers on the tranny
-Unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel (through the inspection covers)
-Unnolt the tranny and slave cylinder

Thats it
