ok, i know its cold out and it might be a little hard to shift when its cold. but i also know you shouldnt have to fight it into gears. i have a short throw shifter and love it. nice click into every gear. the thing is that i have to practicly fight it into 1-3 gear. only for a few minutes till the whole thing gets warmed up. i just did a new clutch and pp about 3-4 months ago. new slave cylinder about a month ago. didnt happen till lately. everything has been fine otherwise.

anyone got any ideas? im hopeing its not the trans.

actually, im really not too sure what trans i have. its a 89 turbo 5 speed. changed the trans fluid when i changed the clutch. but the shift issue only happens for about the first 10 minutes you drive. a lil longer the colder it gets.

What kind of tranny fluid are you running?

Redline MT90 is about the best we can put in there, if you haven't changed it (Mazzer) it will help a lot. :)
i hope so..thanks. is that something the local speed shop should have?

The problem is that these oils are too slippery for the synchros to work right. Thats why, I believe, MT90 is so good, because when they made it, it wasn't designed to have additives in it to make it work with an LSD as well as, or so their site says.

I tried Amsoil Severe Gear, and it has the same problem shifting into 2nd on a cold start.

Redline MT90 is a known transmission tune up in a can (or bottle).

Though when it is cold (< 35F), a used W58 or R154 does have a tendancy
irratable between 1st and 2nd.

2nd gear synchro's are first to wear.

At some point, when 2nd (or sometimes 3rd) catches on a more regular
basis, it's now mechanical.

I've been having the same issues here but find doing a 1-3 shift pattern untill the cars warmed up helps alot. I don't like doing it but figure it's better then forcing the car into second gear. After a few km's it works fine.

MT90 is better then BG syncroshift? I've yet to change mine but want to know whats better for when time comes

My 90T had a grind going into 2nd. I tried Royal Purple, and it got worse. Then I tried Redline MTL 90, and it shifted better than ever. Also, I would check for clutch master cylinder leaks. Replace if it's leaking, and make sure to use clean brake fluid in the hydraulic part of the clutch, and bleed it properly. That should take care of your tranny notchiness.

Yeah, my car is a little rough to shift into first, just takes a little more effort than all the other gears. I think I might drain the tranny and fill it up with Redline MT90, how many bottles would I need? And is it easy to drain the tranny fluid?

yes its easy and i beleive the fluid capacity is 3 qts..give or take
i been doin some searchin lately for MT90 and the only place around that actually stocked it quit ordering it cause they said the prices went through the roof.turns out advanced carrys the water wetter and can special order the fluid so ill have mine in about a week to put it to the test.

Get it at summitracing.com

I just replaced the MT90 it in my 91T, and it actually makes a little more noise than it did before, and the gears actaully feel a little more notchy. I actually think its because I had some old MT90 in there, and it had somehow 'gotten used to it...' hows that for a technical term. I expect it to get back to great after a little while.

And it can actually be a kinda a bitch to get the fill plug off, you need a 24mm offset wrech, that was the only thing I could find that would get up there. Or a 15/16 SAE offset works too, same size.

watch the small aluminum washers, mine was all cocked up when I took it off, so I got another one, and toyota had a hard time finding me the friggin part.

FYI, you will need 4 quarts, it takes 3.2, assuming it all empties out... I used some of the forth, but i did it the "hard" way as some define it and used a suction pump to pump it into the fill bolt rather than removing the shifter

I had a friends car with intermittent hard shifting. It was the clutch master cylinder. It wasn't releasing the clutch intermittently due to air in the system from a leak.
