My speedo cable broke and the O/D light started blinking and then my car started slipping into neutral after the shift to 3rd gear and its an automatic???? Could the speedo causing errors in the speed sensors etc. be doing this??? HELP!!!
Anybody who has experienced auto trans trouble please let me know what your symptoms were and how you were able to resove it...oh and I dont want a 5 speed cause I'm planning on setting my auto up like formula one with sequential and paddle shifters (on the wheel). All advise appreciated. Please give me any ideas for a possible cheap fix. IF WORSE COMES TO WORSE AND I HAVE TO BUY A JUNKYARD TRANS IS THERE ANYWAY TO TELL A GOOD ONE FROM A BAD ONE. This is the worst, I just got my supra back on the road (rebuilt engine by myself at home no help) and now the tranny is shooting craps (MOTOR RUNS GREAT THOUGH!!!

Thanks...I checked the codes and it came up 63, 64 and 42 as I recall. I am told these codes all relate to the broken speedo cable. Which turned out to be the pinion gear for the speedo and not the cable (oh well I have a new cable and pinion gear now). I just replaced both and cleared the ECT but have not driven it yet cause I didn't finish till after 3 am. I am left wondering if this problem could be exclusivly electronics in the auto trans.

64 is a defective lock up solenoid. Do a more indepth check by using the TSRM's auto tranny section.

You have to replace the speedo cable!!!! The tranny shifts due to a sensor in your gage panel which is fed by the speedo cable. The tranny will not shift correctly until you replace this. If you are still having problems after replacing the cable then do your troubleshooting.

I replaced the cable and the pinion gear for the speedometer and I am still going into neutral when it should be shifting to 4th gear BUT only occasionally (I drove it 10 miles in the city traffic this moring and it did it twice) . Other then the 2 times it mis-shifted it worked perfectly with no othe symptoms. I am still holding out hope that it is somthing electrical and not mechanical that is causing these occasional miss-shifts into 4th gear. Also before the speedometer broke the transmission worked perfectly. I am very interested to read any suggestions, comments or experiences in this area as I am not a transmission expert. I will try troubleshooting it using the TSRM manual and see what happens. I will keep this thread posted with the results of whatever I find.

Here's what I recommend. Go thru the complete TRSM checks. This will either confirm or eliminate the electric problems. If everything checks out with your inspection, remove the valve body, clean the shift servos, replace the servo seals (they're like $.80 for two of them).

If you still have shifting problems, it's more than likely time for a rebulid.

im wondering about this speed sensor is it normal for you guys after a long highway run in the 60-70+ area, when you get into town and your only doing like 20-30 mph does teh needle just like to float arround moving arround like 5mph at a time.

i did a run over the passes and it was a constant 70-80mph and when i hit a town i was doing like 30 but the needle was just dancing up and down between 25 and 35, it weirded me out but it went away after i either turned the car off or stayed in town.
