alright I've heard a lot of different opinions on gear oils. I've decided not to go with any specialty oils (i.e. Royal Purple, Redline, etc.)

Anyways I'm going to auto shop class tonight and I wanna do my tranny and diff oils today, but I need to know what to get. I think I've heard mobil 1 is good...but what weight? Do I need some special additives for the diff? Any input is appreciated! I'm off to work now...

Any specific reason you decided not to go with "specialty" oils?

I'd reccomend that you go with Redline MT90, it works very well with our syncros since it has no friction modifiers in it (at least from what I've read it doesn't). Makes shifting very easy and smooth. Others its kind of a gamble on what you're going to get.

Seems people like redline mt90 in the tranny and either royal purple maxgear or redline shockproof in the diff.

Well, I've heard different opinions on Redline. Although I personally believe that it would work great, it is definitely a bit more on the expensive side than basic gear oils. Also I would like to be able to get some by tonight and there aren't any shops in my area that carry redline products, although I can get the Royal Purple stuff at Napa. But 11 bux per bottle, JESUS!

The high performance stuff is usually expensive. Redline, Royal Purple and Amsoil have some of the most expensive fluids.

What about Mobil 1 I might be a bit cheaper then those but still a great product. And you should be able to pick it up at any Auto parts store.

my goodness, it isn't that expensive, especially for something that is going to be in there a good while. Spend $50 and get redline stuff. MT-90 for tranny (4 qts) and 75w-90 (some use shockproof) (2 qts) for diff.

6qts x 7.99 = $42 + shipping from summit, nuff said. If you didn't care what you put in there, you wouldn't have posted, so get the good stuff. I see you need it tonight so will be more locally. That said I've run mobil 1 75w-90 in diff and it was ok, but looked like ass when I took it out.

I tried Amsoil severe gear and the syncros in my trans aren't quite happy with my choice. I'm going to switch it to MT90 soon hopefully.
