do torque converters go bad?
if so how could you tell if it was bad, what are the symptoms and what would be the best replacement to it?(stock, ect...)

thanks

well if the one way clutch on the stator goes bad itll feel like it doesnt want to accelerate, almost like something it hanging up, the stator needds to be stationary or turn at the same speed as the engine side of the converter so it can multiply torque.

other then that maybe the cluch cause its the only real wear item i guess.

unless u flatten the fins then that spretty much it.

what are ur mods?

The lock-up mechanism can also malfunction delaying lock-up or not locking up at all.

yes they can go bad but nothing compared to a clutch. Blowing a clutch is some people's specialty/day job. I have a buddy that blew his clutches on his JDM MR2 twice in one month, and that car is pretty much stock.

well first off it is as fare as i know a stock automatic. mod wise if you read my profile they are listed in there. the reason i am asking this question is because like i had posted months ago about a shaking i experiance and i am just stumped on what it could be.

http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9406 if you skim this thread it wil get u up to speed and maybe understand why i am asking about this. At this point i am scraping the depths of my brain and my friend who is a toyota parts guy and is brother is a toyota mechanic so any other thoughts are great

thanks alot guys

shaking may be loose or bad motor or trans mounts, IDK. I hate auto and it revs to 1500 before it engages with O/D/ off if I dont completely stop but then resum at a light that turns green as u hit it, Otherwsie no issues shifts good and never does it with O/D on, so I dont know it doesnt bother me I just didnt know if they all did that.

is the shaking at highway speeds or at any time? could be water contamination in the tranny fluid possibly from the radiator tranny cooler, the water makes the clutches come apart in the tranny. chevy SUV;s have a problem with this from the dipstick, the water drips from teh cowl to the dipstick handel and runs into teh tranny threw the dipstick. it causes a studder or shaking when the torque converter starts locking up. it makes it grippy but not grippy enough to hold so it shutters or bucks. the fix is rebuild the trans, new converter and flushing the cooler circuit, if the radiator is leaking then replace that too.

if the injectors are bad it would be a slight miss thats causing it, but if it doenst do it while accelerating but does it while cruising it sounds like the torque converter shudder.

now positive jst sounds liek it might be a possibility.

MY dad's old Ford truck shook like one of those vibrating beds when doing a steady highway speed... would almost rattle your brain loose, yet was kind of fun in a way.

IT turned out to be the TC. :icon_conf

Just my past experience, whatever it's worth.

well i dont have a stock rad. so i have an external cooler and i just flushed the fluid less then 1,000 miles ago so no water in it. the car does lunge when it shifts out of first but no other gears, just recently it has started to shake slightly at highway speeds but i think that may be a problem i am having with the MAFT! mine seems to like to de-tune its self about every 6 months. but thats for another thread!

thanks guys any/all other ideas or sugestions are greatly appreciated

I forgot to add this in my last post but this may help some, when i am in drive but lets say sitting at a stop light it is almost like you can feel the engine rocking back and forth (moving the entire tank of a car) but if i shift into neutral then it calms down significantly (but not completly) and also when i just idle forward in drive it is like the car is makeing short quick lunges.

my toyota tacoma has some of the symptoms that ur supra has...it shakes noticably when in drive but calms significantly in neutral yet only shakes when I am stopped and goes away when I put my foot on the gas...if you solve ur problem let me know cuz I'd like to know y it does that...my best guess is either a bad tranny or motor mount or the tc.

If your going to go through the trouble of changing converters, put in a higher stall converter. You will be glad you did. Try IPT

Auto's have a flexplate, not a flywheel, and I can't think of anyone selling aftermarket flexplates for our cars. The stock one is pretty light however.
