Far easier to just hire a lift and stand and do it that way. Dropping the subframe/pan is a very stupid way to do it. Rod knock, imo, should be FIXED not bodged with a set of new bearings. You want to take the crank out and have it inspected. If you just replace the bearings, you're only going to waste your money in the long run.

i did mine by dropping the sub frame a few inches and lifting the engine a few inches. only took a weekend to do the actual job. and you can inspect the crank in the car, just look for scratches on the surface, and use some plastigauge and a micrometer to check your clearances. if the clearances dont match up, then its time to pull the crank.

^I second that notion. Check clearances for sure.

Actually, I just did this very job about 2 months ago. Mine started knocking and I IMMEDIATELY babied it home and turned it off. If you drove very much at all with it knocking, your chances are slim for this being a success.

I lowered the subframe a bit then raised the motor a bit. I pulled the pan and bearings and found that two of mine were knocking. My crank was good so I put a new set of bearings in.

MANY people will beat you up over trying this (they sure gave me a bunch of crap) beause in MOST cases this will not work. The only way to find out is to inspect your bearings and crank. If the crank is scored or if your rod bearings are beat to all heck. You're done.

This job is fresh in my memory so PM me if you have questions.

Good luck! :icon_bigg

I agree! ^
I got sooooo beat up for replacing my rod bearings that it would be good to hear about someone else that was successful with this.

Plus there's a little part of me that would feel good about saying "Nah nah nuh boo boo...you were wrong!!!!!" To all those who were not on my thread to help; but, only to cause grief! :evil2:

I'm glad that it has worked out as good for you as it has for me! :icon_bigg

I've got about 3 months of driving and about 2k miles on my rod replacement and she's still tearing up the road! :naughty:

well I did run it really hard last night on the way home I went up to about 110 down the road and then stop don't worry I did this in a clear area and the car hold together its running like a champ but. Wandering what causes the car to burn oil just want to know that too. Also my clearance is fine to only was bear was bad and that was number 6 but I replace them all,

A couple things come to mind for burning oil. You could be at the point of a rebuild. If your rings are bad or getting there, it'll burn oil. Another is that your turbo could need rebuilding.

Both instances are common with high mileage or if they haven't been well taken care of.

There are other causes for burning oil; but, these are probably the most common. Someone else might chime in with their thoughts/experiences too.
