when mine did that the cam gears were on backwards

How is it possible to put them on backwards? Aren't the mounting sockets offset from the center of the gear?..they should only fit one way.

Well yea. And then you have to make sure the gears line up with the timing belt pulley. And wouldn't the cover not have fitted properly?

Hopefully that's not what the original poster has gone and done.

when i did it the engine did not even make it into the car. the issue was my dad marked both sides of the cam so i went off the first paint marks i saw. the keys lined up and so did the pegs. i did not however have a upper timing cover (exposed gears) so maybe that would have sent a alarm off. i noticed it when i was turning the engine over by hand to verify everything was ok. then i sat and stared at it with my friends and 30 minutes later i went those cam gears look weird and they were on backwards.

best thing was i carefully flipped them over without moving the timing belt so that i would not have to take the front cover off and bam they were 180 out lol. so i had to pull them off for the third time to get it right. boy i love non interference motors

yes i can disassemble the entire motor rebuild it and just because i messed up the cam gears at 3 oclock at night im retarded. i mean no disrespect but i dont know why you immediatly say i dont have a clue im building my second 7m (no i didnt blow the first one up) and ive rebuilt a 22re and a 4afe as well. the only way to learn is to try and i can say with certainty i wont mess up cam gears again
