i have power steering oil mist on my timing belt. What should i clean it with? Its going to be on the car and i plan on cleaning it while running. thanks
You cant clean the timing belt, if you get oil or grease on it, it is considered junk and you should replace it, unless you want it to go bad much faster than it normally would
The timing belt, is made of hard rubber and fibers, oil or any petroleum product will cause the rubber to break down it does not happen overnight but it will significantly shorten the life of your belt. So fix the leak and replace the belt before it breaks or loses a few teeth.
If you really need a temporary fix/cleaning without replacing it the only approach I would take would be to
1) call Gates directly and ask for an engineers/tech support recommendation for getting power steering fluid off. It will be worth the time and call.
2) Do the cleaning with the engine stopped. Rotate it slowly at the crank or bump it and clean he exposed teeth (even if it is wiping it off with a clean dry cloth or a tooth brush with light detergent and water while catching the excess). The problem is that the pulleys will retain some oil and you can't get to the lower pulley.
I would also check it repeatedly for days and drive it easy until I knew it was OK or I changed it.
thanks guys!
Giving gates a call is a good idea but i do understand that the belt does get broken down with oil. The cover was off so i could make sure my belt that i reinstalled with 2k on it was fine but thats my mistake :nono:
