Timing and Cam Adjustment

Hey all,

Well I finally figured out my Clatter Problem that Ive had for a long time. Since I have installed alot of Upgrades to my car, I was told that I need to have my Cams Adjusted.

If I set the Timing at the correct Setting 10 Deg.... I start to get Valve Clatter as though Im low in Oil. Now If I move the timing back to 5 deg the clatter is almost non existant but a little Slugish when taking off.

Since I cant get the timing back to the correct Specs, What do I need to do to correct this. The cam Gears are still in the Center Hole.

Should I try and move the notch to the left or Right?

Well, since no one has responded, I'll throw my 1.5 cents in. I don't have a solution, per se, but I did have the same problem. After building my engine, I would also get valve clatter if I put the timing at stock. If I retarded it slightly, the clatter would go away. This was with the cam gears zeroed out. It seemed to happen once the car would warm up and only around idle. Slightly increasing the RPMS would make it go away.

It slowly went away on it's own, and now It doesn't do it at all. No idea why it happened in the first place.

I think if the valve shims are installed dry, you might get a little clatter until some oil gets under them. I would imagine that the oil will eventually work it's way under some of the shims and kind of cusion them. I dunno, just a thought...

Don't flame me if I'm way off course here...:biglaugh:

That would make sense, however, my problem lasted weeks, and why would it change with timing? :dunno:

what mods have you done? Have you had the head rebuilt?

Try taking the valve covers off and putting some oil on the shims/guides.

Im just guessing here but your valve stem seals may be bad. so your not getting proper lubrication.

I think the only thing the notches are for is if one wears out somehow then you just move to the other, I could be wrong though.

Well, what you are stating doesn't add up. A quick thought is cam timing is off from factory, and so the 10 degrees IGN timing isnt really 10 degrees, and that is a pinging. But I cant hear it from here, and knock control is closed loop. I am not sure what to think. I almost think it is just the aftermarket gear loose, and when you back it off, it has no clearance to make noise with.

If you are getting clatter from the valves, check the shim clearances and install the proper thickness shims. The TRSM tells you how...the car needs to be dead cold when you do this.
