heres the situation: i've got rod knock haha.

so i decided to just take my time and save money and completely build the motor. i know some of the things i'll be buying but i have a few questions. I'm going to be assembleing the motor myself (1st time :ugh: ) but i also need to figure out what work i need done at the machine shop. or if the price is reasonable enough, i'll just have it assembled there.

now for a parts list:

acl bearings (rod, main, thrust)http://www.aclus.com/engine_bearings.htm http://www.aclperformance.com.au/Toyota2JZ-GTEBearings.htm i'm right to think i need bearings for a 2jz right? just the standard size?

stock rods but shot peened for added strength

cp pistons from driftmotion (ah why not right?)

arp undercut head studs, main studs, and rod bolts all for a 2jz

i have the engine gasket kit

now the head is where i'm unsure. i have cams already and i installed them all myself, but i'm just not sure what fits the 1jz head (valves and such). 2jz parts? what would you guys do to the head if you had enough money?

It's a sticky

EDIT : Here you go

Common parts between the 2JZ and 1JZ
- Power steering pump
- Alternator
- Spark plugs (ngk 3330 and 6097)
- US spec 550cc injectors (resistor pack needed)
- JDM Spec 440cc injectors (drop in upgrade)
- Water Pump (requires removal of the 1J hydro fan and a 2J pulley)
- Head gasket (although most other gaskets do not swap, get a 1J set to do it right)
- Clutch fan (if you use a MKIV water pump and pulley)
- Serpentine belt (but NOT timing belt - see below)
- Oil filter and relocation kits
- Intercooler kits
- Plug coils
- Cam gears (incl aftermarket adjustable)
- JDM 2JZ Map sensor
- Ignitor
(edit: some more added info)
1) The rod and main bearings.
2) The head bolts, crank and rod bolts from stock or ARP either bolts or studs w/nuts.
3) The pistons including the wrist pins, wrings and locks.
4) The head gasket, stock or aftermarket.
5) stock side feed or after market side feed high ohm injectors. Low ohm injectors require wiring in the 7M or preferably 2JZ injector resistor pack.
6) Water pump and housing when replacing the hydro fan to electric or clutch fan.
7) Cams are normally not interchangeable with out some grinding on the 2JZ cam and having it spun balanced, HKS, Jun and Blitz all make 256, 264, and 272 cams for the 1JZ.
8) Cam shims, springs, retainers, Valves and springs, along with buckets are interchangeable.
9) turbos are not directly interchangeable and require a degree of machining to swap out the 12As for 12b.
The list will be updated as I remember and acquire more info.

i always thought that some of that was wrong. pistons are interchangable i guess, but i thought the rings had to be modified.

and i thought the port sizes for the valves are different between a 1jz and a 2jz. i might just stay stock valves and but get springs/retainers.

eh i'll make it work out somehow. i'm basically just looking for suggestions here

I'd use Clevite instead of the ACL, but I'm sure someone on here will disagree with me. I used the clevite bearings and bought new pistons and rods for mine. I also had my head ported and polished with a three angle valve job. The 2jz valves would have been good to use, but somebody stole my two 2jz heads. I've heard the valves are bigger in either the exhaust or intake, but I can't remember which ones. There are numerous articles on here about it though. You can also find a lot of jz info on www.supraforums.com
Good luck.

ACL makes a better bearing. They offer a Race bearing for 1jz/ and 2jz. That's all I use on all the Kaizen rebuilt JZ's and 7M's. Clevite would be my second choice if i needed to build it in a heart beat and ACL was on back order.

Jake, Does your 1jz sound like mine???? Or does it have the tick that i told you about right before i got rodknock??? cause if it has thet tick sound save the motor & don't mess the crank, i think my crank is not worth saving but we won't find out till we pull the motor out wednesday.. peace.

everything seems to be ok except for the rod bearings. the motors out of the car and i can move a few of the rods back and forth :( definately acl bearings, but leaning towards stock valves with upgraded springs and retainers. any opinion on which brand to go with for springs/retainers? brian crower?

What is the rest of your setup? If you are single or upgraded twins (like the blitz kit) you might want to look into a 1.5jz. If it is indeed true that the pistons are interchangable between the 1 and 2jz motors, then you in theory would be able to use a stock 1jz gasket on the 2jz-ge with your 1jz pistons.

i really want to stay 1jz though otherwise that would be my answer for sure.

the way i see it, if you go 3L bottom end, you have a 2jz. i don't care if the 1jz head is still on there and its really a 1.5jz. 1jz is 2.5L nothing more. and i want a 1jz.

slap on the same turbo as a 2j and in some instances, have the same power for an extra 3k rpm's, who wouldn't want that hehe
