Tierods or Hub?

My 89 NA Supra has a problem with the right front wheel. The car has a shimmy, esp. bad under braking. I jacked it up and there is no play in the suspension when the tire is grabbed top and bottom, (12 & 6 oclock), but there is noticable play side to side, (3 & 9 oclock). This leads me to believe is is the tierod end, (and not the balljoints). I looked at the TRSM Online, and it talks about the wheel hub.

I would think that if it was the wheel hub it would have play at any position.

Any help and/or experiences would be appreciated.

Hmm, usually a shimmy when braking is a warped rotor, needs to be turned.

bad tie rods, from my experience, shimmy at speeds from 40-60mph or so until they get worse, then the speed range increases.

I think if it where the hub it would move in all directions right? I am with you on that one. Have you checked the lugs? Sorry, just gotta make sure you cover the little stuff too.
Can you see any indacation that the tie rod end its loose or dammaged?

Tanya: It seems that the condition exsists while not braking as well, which suggests that it is not a rotor issue.

Rotors rarely "Warp" as a kid I worked as a Machinist in the Brake industry and had to have machined a few 1000 discs and don't remember many with more than 20>30 thou runout and these were totally thrashed!

Most times the pulsation you feel is either hard spots or Pad material buildup in uneven deposits.

not sayin you're wrong Ian but when i worked at Oreilly's I'd turn 10 sets or more a day of warped rotors.:3d_frown: they warp frequently over here. :nono:

I've had a few Supras with "warped" rotors, and this was something that was documented as being a design flaw in some early magazine articles by Road & Track. They had taken a 30,000 mile old mkII and drove it for a good long while, mostly normal driving, but had to replace the front rotors twice in a relatively short amount of time. (after not being able to be turned anymore)

How much runout were they seeing Tanya?
(I'm not saying it doesn't happen it's just more rare then people think, slightest pedal pulse and it's instant "Warped Rotors" not the resin buildup after cooking the pads that it actually is)

Believe me, it's not "slight" at all. I'm sure some people would be afraid for their lives if they hit the brakes in my car, lol. Not only can you feel it in the brake pedal, it's obvious with the wheel off and you can run your fingers across what is supposed to be flat and it's wavy metal.

Tanya: Not sure on a Mk2 but I know when I had stock rotors on my Mk3 it would pulse badly if I didn't use a torque wrench on the Lugs!
my stock rotors on my MK3 feel, and i am pretty sure are, warped. i guess i could try using a torque wrench to put on the lug nuts.... what is the torque specs on lug nuts?

I don't see how a warped rotor would manifest in freeplay in the suspension but I will check it out.

I will also swap out the tierod and report back as to the findings.

You guys have been a GREAT help!!!!
