Well im about ready to swap my sp61gt back on but i figured id post up a rather unique issue that you might all like the hear about.

Friday - drive back to dallas and meet up with Supraguy88t (Christian) to buy his 1990 NA for my roomie. Drive up to Allen where my car is and start swapping the turbo on. The car had been sitting for about a month while I was out at school and waiting for SP to send my SP61GT back. I start to put the turbo on and realize its not clocked correctly, then im missing the oil sending line adaptor. piss. get the turbo all mocked on the motor minus the oil sending line vowing to get an adaptor the next day.

Sat. Go out and get the correct 90 degree an fitting and put it on the car. prime the turbo and get the oil sysytem all nice and pressurized. start car... some smoke but i figured just oil burning off from the last turbo (front and rear seals went) take it for a test drive and blow an intercooler hose off (forgot to tighten down when reinstalled d'oh!) take it back and its still smoking a bit..hummm load the car up with roomie and bro and head back to Christian's shop. car is smoking just like a blown turbo..wonderful ... pull in and ask him what he thinks, we end up swapping back on my old ct26 which we know is good and its still smoking... humm also where is all my PS fluid going? well here he started trouble shooting and found that the idle up valve was broken (2 plastic seals and 2 rubber gaskets, both scratched and torn, one plastic one cracked) allowing PS fluid to flow up into the intake manifold and into the motor... wonderful. replace with a new valve and no more smoke!

this weekend the SP61 goes back on. so next time you think your turbo is blown... look at your ps pump!

PS/Trans oil has a very distinctive smell that you should now recognise!

Your nose is a very handy tool for this sort of thing, coolant also has it's very own smell when burning!

Good catch though might help someone down the track!

Back in the day I used to run a TH400 trans and after a bad backfire it popped the diaphragm in the Vac Modulator sucking trans fluid into the intake!

At the time I thought "Damn blown the engine badly this time"

It's a smell I'll never forget!

Well at least your intake and combution chamber is clean!:biglaugh: AutoTranny fluid is a good way to clean it out. Don't know how well the catalytic fairs with that though.

Good information - not something I would have thought to check, that's for sure. I've seen some other odd examples of this kind of thing - like my buddy's Talon that blew a seal in the brake booster, sucked brake fluid into the vacuum system, and promptly started leaking brake fluid from the mechanical boost gauge in the cabin. That made for a great big WTF????
