Okay guys. I got the head back from the machine shop. I bought a set of OEM Toyota head bolts.(I know everyone says ARP but I'm trying to be conservative with money.) What I was hoping is that everyone would put their .02 cents worth in to tell me anything and everything I should know to do before putting the head back on or while putting the head back on.

Was also wondering if someone could fill me in on the whole RTV on the front of the block thing. Saw someone do this in one walkthrough but don't understand what for. Also noticed it was guped on pretty well and they said it wasn't enough..... how much gupage do you need on there?

Thanks ya'll,
Josh

If you must use toyota head bolts make sure the threads in the block are in pristine condition. Get a clean head bolt and make sure they turn smoothly all the way in to the block.

Dont put too much oil down the threaded hole either. It may have a bit of a hydraulic lock effect if there is loads of oil in the hole and no where to go.

You just put a dab of the RTV were the front timing cover meets the block, smooth it along the intersection of the two. Put too much and the HG may not seal.

It's very important you do not set the head on a hard surface while prepping it. The weight of the head on the valves that are extended can bend the stems...even slightly = NOT good. Set the head on a block of foam rubber or a pair of 2x4's along the sides (not touching the combustion chambers). Be very careful you don't scratch/gouge the head deck.

Top pic...RTV on the two areas circled:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?Section=EM&P=55

It's there to prevent oil from running down the back timing cover behind the belt.

First, make sure you read the entire TSRM section on the head...then read it again. Refer to it every time you accomplish a step.

Use a thread chaser to clean out the head bolt threads in the block...you need a M12x1.25 and a T handle to hold it. Be very careful, you don't want to cross thread. Use compressed air to blow out 1st and lube the chaser with machine oil. Blow out the holes again after you chase them.

Check all of your valve shim clearances before you install the head...much easier to do off the car. This is a must if you had valve work done...the seals should be replaced at minimum. I would also check the cam journal clearances. Note there is a specific torque sequence if you remove the cams.

If you are using a stock composite HG, I would coat it with copper spray (both sides). Let it get tacky and carefully (you get one chance) lay it on the block using the index pins for alignment.

Torque in the TSRM sequence using 10-15 ft/lb increments. Lube the bolt threads with 30W motor oil...do not put oil in the block holes. Go to 70-75 ft/lbs for final torque. Stock head bolts will need to be re-torqued after 5 or so complete heat-up/cool down cycles.

Welp, I WAS going to endeavor this today... unfortunately I have lost one of my head bolt washers so I had to drive to the Toyota dealership(25 miles away) and ORDER one.... and I get to drive back to pick it up when it comes in. JOY!!! Not happy about it at all. I was hoping to atleast have the head, cams, and timing belt all together bolted on today. Oh well......:icon_evil
