BOULDER, Colo. — Diana Barnett was driving on Broadway Monday afternoon with her 18-year-old daughter in the passenger’s seat, when she felt a blast of wind, saw a blur of green and heard a “big crash.”

Downed by the wind, a 75-year-old maple tree had pierced the windshield of Barnett’s Toyota Prius, going all the way into the car’s floorboard. Barnett went to Boulder Community Hospital with back pain, while her daughter wasn’t injured.

“It was just so huge and sudden,” said Barnett, of Boulder, who was treated and released from the hospital. “My daughter and I were just in shock. It was really God’s blessing that we were OK.”

A second car — also a light-green Toyota Prius — was hit by the tree, too, but it sustained only minor damage and its driver escaped injury.

I don't think the tree liked the loonies in Boulder and California trying to steal their carbon dioxide, a necessary compond for life function. Karma is rough, wear a helmet.

The Prius was built strictly for mandated politcal reasons.

Mandated? How exactly?

Funny story and I'm actually a fan of the hybrids. I think to justify their existence through environmental reasons is idiotic, but it's kinda neat to get 100mpg coming down from the eisenhower tunnel into denver.

Call me a yuppy, but I'd love a hybrid sports car...

The Prius came out in Japan, in 1997.

And didn't even make it to the US till 2001.

And Toyota had to jump through hoops if i remember right to introduce this interesting concept to the US. It was sold as a novelty that took off on it's own.

California for it's clean air reasons promotes buying the car, So California backs the car that toyota built. Toyota didn't build this car to be backed, it just happened.

If you show some justification that the US Goverment had any part of Toyotas Hybrid Program or promotes it over any other hybrid i will retract my prior statements.

In Japan it's quite simple; Fuel is EXPENSIVE and they can afford to replace batteries over the cost of fuel, and also the prius is a "big" car out there. Considering K and ultra compacts are what almost every family uses.
