What do you guys use to get the head clean and get the gasket off? I dont want to scrape the head using a razor because it will mess up the surface.

whenever replacing the head gasket, the head should be machined... why are you worrying about that?? Also, when I pulled my head, the hg was totally clean, I just peeled it off of the head and block...is that normal?

im not getting it machined because im using a OEM HG and they are forgiving unlike the steel ones, I know it would be beter if I did but I dont have the money or the time, besides im only planning on running the motor for 3-4 years. im using ARP studs at 80, the stock one has a mild leak, only gave me trouble under WOT at boost, well T66 boost :evil2:

yea your right im taking a risk, but with the new ARP studs being alot tighter the gasket will form if there is a slight warp, besides the stock one is just dribbling

I come from a land down under
Umm you do realise if it's annealed even slightly when you unbolt it it's going to banana?

Use the reverse sequence you'd use to tighten it and do it in 3 passes to minimise this effect.

I do not beleive heads need to be machined nor blocks for head gasket service. I work at RDO Material Handling as a forklift technician. I have done a few head gaskets on ICE forklifts. I only scraped the surfaces with a razor and a vacuum right next to it to suck up the scraps. That is exactly how everyone in my shop does it. Two of the guys there have been in the field for 35 years and one of them is the best fabricator, engine builder, welder and general mechanic I have ever met. I also know other people in both the V8 world and Supra world who do not deem it neccessary to machine the block and head everytime you do a head gasket. Only if the checks the TSRM tells you to make to the surfaces do not match spec does it need to be done, end of story.

Well, you ould possible get by without resurfacing, but why risk it? If you're already going to do it, do it right the first time.

SySt: Okay, forklifts and Supras are entirely different things...

PorterzSupra: Just machine it, its not like it's that expensive or anything... IMO, it's just not worth the risk... Some extra, and very valuable insurance.

Forklifts are different from one another. But so is a 7MGE and a 7MGTE. It's just about how different they are. I will tell you, just because it's a forklift does not mean it follows different laws of physics. Besides, some older forklifts from Hyster use a small block Chevy 350, thats a motor in many cars as well. Hyster also uses some Mazda engines and a GM 4.3L V6. Not to mention Mistubishi makes forklifts with Mitsubishi engines, one being a 4G64. And Toyota? They make forklifts as well, using Toyota engines.

Let me ask you, what makes you think you are in a position to tell me how different a forklift is from a Supra? Have you even so much as driven a forklift? I worked on and driven countless forklifts. I have owned 2 Supras, one N/A and my current turbo but going back to N/A. I have owned them for 4 years. I done more with my Supra than most people on these forums ever do, I do know Supras well also. Oh, and another thing. When I put my MHG in I did not have the head or block machined only smoothed the surfaces by wet sanding with very fine grit sandpaper. I beat the shit out of that engine afterwards, it was running great making better than stock spec compression when I removed it and did not consume coolant at all.

Who am I kidding? This is the automotive industry, everyone is an expert and thinks they are damn special for being so. You guys can go do what you want when it comes to your car. But are you smarter than the TSRM when it comes to the 7M?
