As the title states, this is the first documented occurrence of such a build as far as I know. I spent hours upon hours searching for information regarding this swap and all I found were the naysayers.
"It can't be done,"
"I could barely fit a TH400, let alone a 4l80 DEFINITELY not with stock GM housing,"
"I started but didn't finish,"
"It's just too big," <(that's what she said.)

So I decided to see just how tight our tunnels really are. Now of course, you might be saying, why not just cut and weld a new tunnel? Turns out I didn't need to.

After having issues with third gear in two R-154's at my power level, I simply had enough and became determined to find the solution for strength, and OVERDRIVE without a trans computer. Other options being ;
700R-4 (too weak/not reliable),
Th400 w/ GearVendors Overdrive (A tad expensive, bulky, clunky),
or just go with a Th400 w/ a custom low geared rear-end. (loss of launch).....

In my price-range left only the option for a manually shifted 4l80e. A transmission with TH400 strength, plus overdrive for not too much more $$. A word of caution: this swap is not for the faint of heart and will require quite a bit of Tunnel modifications to make it work. I'd certainly recommend some form of a cage to increase rigidity as well.

I'd like to use this space to personally thank a few people;
--Kenneth Mcarroll, of McAlester Oklahoma, who is owner of 1320 Transmissions and builder of my STOUT 4l80e which was top notch quality as was his customer service. He went above and beyond the call of duty with this project.

--Chris at Circle-D Billet Specialties in Houston for building my multi disk-lockup billet torque converter. Ls trans side w/10.75" bolt pattern.

--Dave Henry of Boostwerx for the Gm adapter setup. He as well went out of his way to make sure things are right!

--Jake at Jake's Performance for his 4l80e full manual control box which allows full control over which gear is selected, without a computer.

I took a few photos along the way that I'd like to share as they may help someone who wishes to do the same.

Here is a short clip of it driving for those interested in the shift characteristics.

Day One:

Engine out:

The old R-154 out! :
p1987836_3.jpg

The 4l80e which is in! You can see here, the rear "speed sensor" had to be removed and replaced with a GM plug which comes stock on some models. as well as the primary elecrical connector which caused space contraints:
p1987836_4.jpg

Here is a picture of how my tunnel looked before modification. (someone elses but you get the idea):
p1987836_5.jpg

A little of the dash had to be cut out to make the shifter fit but nothing too extreme. The shifter also had to be modified a little but again, nothing crazy. Then a plate made to cover GAPING hole as well as new hole drilled for shifter cable... Shifter used : B&M Stealth Pro Ratchet.:

Finished installation of shifter:

This shows operation of the shifter for those who were interested.

Beginning of BFH mods:
p1987836_9.jpg

This is where I decided to put my cooler which give over 0.5" clearance between it, the condenser, and the radiator. Cooler used: Tru-Cool Max LPD4739 (40,000 GVW rating) :

Installation complete:

More BFH mods and junkyard spare MOCK-UP 4l80e. Here is where I started to find issues. The Stock R-154 mounts are just in the way and must be removed.

This is where the stock mounts interfere:

Mockup location used:

Here is another tight spot where the cooler lines exit the transmission. The rear exit wasn't so bad as it just needed a few pounds, but the front need quite a bit. Front shown:

More tunnel shots:

Same passenger side after a little massaging... much closer.:

and finally parts start showing up!! starting with the custom 4l80e yoke driveshaft:
p1987838_7.jpg

Then the billet goodies!! :

p1987838_9.jpg

The MAGIC black box the converts the 4l80e to full manual control:
p1987838_10.jpg

The transmission is finally built with quite of list of much stronger parts!! Should barely break a sweat with my power level.:

Lokar stick used :

Now comes time for the trans crossmember. I used 2 x 1/2" steel beams cut to size, 2 corner brackets, along with an aluminum center section which I drilled slots in for adjustability and remove-ability.

Nice adapter piece from Dave H. I sold him a few adapters when he did a 2 piece unit. The billet piece is a work of art.

Nice job on the install. Always fun to do what can't be done.

I can't get over the post 89 spoiler with the pre 89 front bumper and lip. or maybe it's the stock lip with the bomex side skirt but I can say it's one of a kind. as for the transmission I think albert meade was attempting this before but I think he might of gave up on this route but he's gone through a couple r154s himself.

Beals- Is that a good thing or bad thing? hah!

IJ. - Almost every vital component of this particular 4l80e has been upgraded, lightened, and "rollerized." After speaking with my transmission builder, we decided it should be fine at my modest rev limit of 7200. Also, notable individuals have had good luck with lesser built transmissions at even higher rpms. ( rev>8000 ) Check S.P. 4l80e Mk4 builds for information.

Just thought I'd check as it was a factor when I looked at using one after killing the 60e 9 times ;)

Congrats! Really clean install looks really nice. I've recently been weighing the options for an overdrive. Two main components one in which you solved easily is the electrical. Adding the box has seemed to make it pretty easy. Would you mind taking more pictures on your trans mount installed? Trying to see exactly where you hooked into :).

This is where the trans mount is tied in to. I put a picture in the thread that showed my first iteration of a mount which I welded into the rails pointed out above.

ha! Ala supra stick! As far as costs go, I don't keep track as it's my hobby and passion. But I WILL mention that I didn't spend 8k, which is what the notable Mk4 option costs. I will also mention that it was cheaper than a proper V-160 swap, and cheaper than some TH400 options for the Mk3.

OH, and I WILL keep my "supra stick" as it's more than just a stick, it's a reminder. A reminder of where this all started. A reminder of where it will go, A reminder not to grow too big of a head....Plus, that cash can go towards something more important such as; gas to drive it, or an oil change.
