Temperature Gauge acting funny

when i drive the car sometimes my temperature gauge goes all the way up to about the 3rd marking before overheating and then when i rev the car or speed up to about 40 mph it quickly drops back down to normal operating temperature. also when i first start the car like lets say in the morning, when i drive normally for like i'll say 30- 40 secs it rises quickly to normal temperature. it doesn't over heat or ne thing. could my gauge be faulty or my sensor?

any coolant spilling out of the overflow? burning coolant? white smoke out of tailpipe?

sounds like you have air pockets in the coolant.

nope i found my problem. i recently had a hose blow off and i refilled the system and started up and didn't refill it after i shut the car off after running it. in other words the first time i filled it up and started it up i thought the whole system was filled but is wasn't. i put water and coolant in it and filled it up today and that solved my problem. car's holding temp now. thanx for the responses.
