Okay guys,
I dunno when, but I will make some time to do some write-ups for all the common stuff we do....

Removing the dash, replacing a clutch, engine swaps, timing belt, plugs... whatever!

I have a bunch of experience doing it, but not alot of pics. I am volunteering to put some detailed how-to docs together, which will walk ppl thru this work. many times we're just lost , until we see a pic... ya know (like the rheostat ;-)

Anyways... starting the thread and I hope it gets stickied.... post up an upcoming project and volunteer some pics... Me (or another volunteer) will put the tech-tip together and get it posted somewhere... maybe Supras.com again? Or in the FAQ sections....

We have lots of new, younger members in our community and we are often trying to help, in a reactive mode. Let's do it pro-actively. Kewl?

We should come up with a template so there is a single look and feel for all tech tips on this site. There could even be a way to make it match the forum look and feel so there is uniformity to the branding.

Yeah... It should all have the same look & feel... that's the easy part. It's gathering all this stuff and putting it together.

C'mon now guys... whos' got projects going on this weekend?

Here's a list of project-pics I'd like (I have most of the info/knowledge, but additional tips/steps is also useful)....

1. Timing belt
2. Dash removal/replacement (heater core?)
3. Knock sensor re-wire
4. Strut/spring replacement
5. BHG repair (need more pics)
6. Fuel sender cleaning/replacement
7. Dash/guage install (indiglo, etc)
8. Alarm (aftermarket)... I have info/diagrams
9. Replacing stock radio/speakers
10. Fuel filter
11. Starter

Add to the list... a wishlist might inspire someone else to contribute too. Once I have some content, I'll mock-up a few examples and see if the forum admins will let us use their logos or whatever... I have no particular preference, but we'll waste alot of time trying to figure all that out at this early stage...

Anything's welcome... I thought about going thru and re-doing some of my stuff for this effort, but that's alot of work and I'm likely to break something in the process ;-)

I am actually going to bleed my brakes tonight... so here we go...

Oh and yes, provide the pics and you will get the credit for the contribution.

Satan: Work with this site to build the tech tips in a template form. Something that can be changed easily without rewriting each page. I am sure if the pages fit this template and are hosted on this server there would be no worries on using the logos.

or easy does it's , easier ways to do what we wouuld commonly do, like a thread that covers how one person would go about removing bellhousing bolts with everything in the car, and how someone else would do it so theres multiple perspectives to one solution.

same for say.. brakes and different peoples tricks to remove rusted on rotors, doing suspension, etc.

I'll start working on a template for submissions.

Tonight, I bled my brakes and changed one of my license plate bulbs and took pics of both. So, tho I know it may be silly stuff, I'll submit some stuff to get it started.

Tomorrow, I'll contact an admin thru the suggestions-forum and see what they'll let us do and start gettin' stuff done.

jebus: The problem with simply having a thread outlining the tech tip is there is generally too much discussion about the tip in question. The reader is forced to have to wade through a bunch of junk to get to the details.

The way I see this process working is as follows:
Model 1:
Something is discussed on the forum.
At some point there is generally some sort of agreement.
The important details should then be pulled out of the thread and put into a clearly written tech tip.

Model 2:
Someone does some modification.
That person writes a tech tip.

Corrections:
If a correction is needed then a new topic would be started on the forum to discuss any information.
Once the discussion is finished the tip is updated if necessary.

I agree with KeithH...

What I am suggesting is that we have a Tech-Tips subforum and the tech-tips exist there as threads, which are locked. If an update or additional thread is necessary, someone can submit to an admin to unlock, etc.

Like Keith H said... seen plenty of good info in a thread, after reading thru 26 pages of opinions and wisecracks. A simple, straightforward, guide with pics, tools/time needed, tips, gotchas, and resources.

I'll work on something this weekend and submit for ya'll to look at and critique.

By the way... there are already some basics in the FAQ/Reference forum... Dylan and a few other's tech-tips.... I just happened to come across 'em. Crazy tho, been a member forever and never knew there were any out there.

I guess maybe we can begin there...
