i was wondering if this would be a bad idea....

i had an idea of removing the Targa Top, and welding in a steel. i thought that welding in some sheet of steel will lower the weight, and i thought it'll be cool to have a hard top supra, which is hard to come by, and yeah i just dont use my targa at all haha

one of my concerns tho was will it lessen the rigidty of the body in anyway?

There is hardly any weight difference between the targas and hartops....Not worth it in that aspect.

Hardtops do look better though (unless the car is black, stupid seals sticking out)

and IF you were actually going to go through with this idea, I would just get someone to TIG the targa in place. No point throwing on sheet metal and then fabricating an x-brace, and then some how making the headliner fit...Just use what you already have, it is already braced. It is obviously still going to take a shit load of custom work.

And placing a hardtop in place of the targa doesn't really get at the weight difference between the models, if I remember correctly, the majority is actually in the door panels to increase rigidity when the targa top is off, so you'd have to find some hardtop doors to really get the weight reduction benefit.

A/B pillars.

As well as extra bracing under the car.

From the factory: about 80lbs heavier for the targa, but if you convert a targa into a hardtop, you've still got the extra weight, so it won't really help.

Take out the seals at the top, weld the targa in place and sand down. Paint.. Instant hard top.. :bigthumb:

It is WAY not worth it to convert. If you want a hardtop, buy a hardtop.
The Targa will be more sought after if you decide to sell it later, esp if the
person checks the vin, sees it was a targa and now a hardtop? yeah it'll just
cause more trouble.
