:1zhelp: Any tips on taking out the motor and leaving the trans[5 speed] in the car?Do I still need to unbolt the crossmember. It looks like a promblem will arise clearing the oil pan to release it from the tranny's bell housing.Should I just say screw it and take the trans out as well?

when i did my rebuild i left the tranny in the car and it was a pain. when i was putting it back in, i pulled the tranny out just to mate it back to the engine before putting it back in. alot easier. screw bell housing bolts!

yeah i hear its much eaiser to remove both...dont feel bad, you'll thank yourself.

and that main upper bolt i think is the main problem with removing them seperately...

plus, you can change the fluids and clean up the tranny while its out...

have fuN!!!

p.s. - what are you sticking back in!? pics? thread? i'm curious...

Top tranny bolts are easy, you just need to convince your girl that she would like to grease up her arm, slide it up next to a cold transmission, and pull two bolts out for you. :D

On the serious side, pulling the tranny with the engine is SO much easier.

There's an easy way to get that bolt. Get 4 ft. of extension and a good wiggler socket. Put the whole car up on stands, as high as you feel safe. Put a jack under the trans., take the cross member out, and let the tail of the trans. down as far as it'll go. Reach up there with the 4' of extension and the wiggler socket, and take that bolt out first. Then get the rest of the bolts, working your way down each side, leaving the bottom bolt on each side for last. make sure your jack is set good, and raise the trans. slightly. Take out the last 2 bolts, and you got it. You might have to gently pry the bell housing off of the dowels that align it with the block, but make very sure you got all the bolts out before you pry too hard. The combination of 4' extension and letting the trans. down makes all the bolts alot easier to get to.

Like all these guys said if at all possible pull out the tranny as well. It can be a pain to get upper tranny to motor bolts undone and the starter is easier too.

p.s. i used 5 extensions and an air ratchet lol zipped those bad boys right out.

it is easier to take both out because you need to lower the transmission to do the top bolts on the bell housing meaning undoing and lowering the transmission so might as well take it all out.

I guess you could pull the head to make the afore stated bolts a bit easier to get to then you could leave the tranny but it's still easier with it out. But you have options. Especially if you have not the tools to pull an engine.

that might work if you have a BHG, but if not its a bad idea. you'll be down at least 100 bux for a new gasket, plus the crapshoot of cleaning you have to do for a proper seal. and it might not even help access to the bolt. i dont know that part for sure.
