will not come on when the headlights are on. For the running lights to work, does the ignition need to be on, or can the car be off, and running lights on.
The fuze and relay are both okay and the wiringing has voltage and ground, at the bulbs and lightfittings are all ok, why else could the running lights not turn on when the headlights are on?
Also are the tail light bulbs for an 87' code 1156 or 1157?
please help!

Have you replaced any taillights lately? If so did you use the two prong ones. Some people make mistakes and will use a 1 prong one, many things including tems, headlights, running lights, can be screwed up.

How many running lights work correctly?

In each tail light fixture (left/right)

Reverse light: 1156
Brake/Tail lights: 1157 (Qty 2.)
Signal light: 1156

Center high-mount stop light (NA) 1156. I believe that the center lamp for an '87 or '88T in the wing is also an 1156, but since I've never replaced one... The license plate lamps are 194.

The 1156 lamps are single filament lamps, either on or off. These are used for the reverse, signal and high mount stop lights. The signal lamps may be 1156A (amber)

The brake/tail lights are 1157. These have dual filaments, one low intensity one for tail lights, and one high intensity one (Equivalent to the 1156 filament) for brakes.

If you short between the brake and tail lights, you'll have issues, since the brake lights are grounded out. This may blow your tail lamp fuse, or damage your lamp failure sensor box. (Yellow box bear driver's side tail lamp fixture.)

Make sure that you have the correct lamps in the sockets. You can look in the sockets and see the contacts. If there's a single contact, that's for an 1156 lamp. If there's dual contacts, that's for an 1157 lamp.
