it depends on what MHG you're looking at.
i believe the HKS, TMS (titan motorsports), and GReddy MHG's require 10RA or less.
the Cometic (make sure you remove the rivet!) requires 50RA or less.
and remember that you've gotta have that finish on both the head and block.

Head is more important than the block, I also believe it is a 25 ra for an HKS or similar MHG and 50 ra for the Cometic. Just make sure the block is clean without high or low spots, head should be like a babies ass, like Shaeff likes.

I would think that the aluminum head would be more forgiving because it is made of a softer metal. Interesting that you would say the opposite.
