I am looking for a few more parts...before I do just a few quick questions...

Is the black, plastic trim piece that holds the stock tape player and climate control the same from 86.5-92? Or does it change after '88?Mines cracked... How do I get it out? There is one screw I found below the shifter. The top of the plastic above the climate control is clipped in, I managed to pull it off. But the bottom around the shifter boot is solid, I cannot unclip. How do I get it off?

Same goes for the MOUNTING location of the climate control, does it get changed after '88 or is it the same until '92? Can I swap a 89+ climate control into my pre 89 supra, or is the wiring different?

NEXT...I think I read the gauge cluster is different...for the speedo. Is this true? So I need a 86.5-88 cluster to fit into my 87? Or can I use any up until '92? I think my temp. gauge is dead and I need a cluster to cut up (mine) to practice mounting new gauges.

If anyone can help, I really appreciate this.

Thanks!

The stereo trim is easy to remove. you have to take the ashtray out and remove the bolts from there then theres one on the drivers side down by the shifter, another on the right side of the steering wheel (on the bottom side of the trim). Then it should just pop out.

I believe the trims are the same throught the years. I know 86-88 are the same for sure.

The gauges are compatible, if you're swapping all of them either get the same model of tach (ie: n/a? get and n/a tach, turbo? get a turbo tach.). The differences are pretty much just asthetic, guage faces are different and the needles are different.

The Climate Control is a straight swap. No wiring changes and the mounting location is the same.

imo the gauge clusters from 89-92 looked better than the earlier ones. i think the needles were all one color, rather than a green with an orange end.

All Supras had orange needles. The only difference was the pre-89's had orange over the center peice, 89+ didn't.

1. The trim piece has 4 screws, and some clips. Remove the screws and shift knob, and pull it off. It is the same for all years.

2. The climate control from 89+ Supras is plug and play for pre-89's, but the defrost/foot position will not function. Make sure you get one from Canada, USA ones are in fahrenheit, Canadian ones are in Celcius.

3. The gauge clusters are somewhat interchangable, but you'll need to match it up correctly. The best possible cluster you can get is the 89 cluster with the correct options (auto/5-speed, turbo/n/a, tems). Everything will read correctly provided you have the correct part. Turbo tach will work with 7M-GTE, N/A tach for 7M-GE, speedo will work no matter what, Turbo gauge, etc. The only thing you won't have working without a bit of a rewire is the cruise control light on the tach. That needs to be added if you want it.

Here is a pic of my 88 with 89 steering wheel, various gauges (all with 89+ needles), 89+ climate control, 89+ shift boot, e-brake handle, proper cruise light wiring, 89+ combination switch, 89+ switches, etc:

Hey Jeff, is the engine temperature gauge like that on all pre-89's? I noticed that yours has a line that extends from hot to cold. My '89 US version does not have that line, just empty space between hot and cold.

Hey Jeff, do you know why the lower defrost position won't work with the 89+ CC? Did any wires change position, or perhaps the polarity of the line?

JEff,
To avoid not having the foot/defroster option I will just stick with a pre-89 cluster. Thanks for the information, you sure know a lot about these cars!!

hmm I didnt know that the defrost/foot position wouldnt work.. interesting... when my car is on auto the heat goes to the bottom vents only automatically with a 88 -> 89+ conversion... or is it just the button itself doesnt affect it?

Your pre-89 climate control doesn't have that option either, so you're not losing anything.

I've looked into the wiring before briefly, but never came up with any conclusive information on that. I actually believe quite a bit of wiring changed, and that the 89+ climate control into a pre-89 may be luck that it ends up working in the first place, haha. I'm going to look into it further and may end up changing a bunch of wiring in the car. I think the difference for 89+ setups actually include another actuator position or something to control foot/defrost. I will look into it, and if I find anything, I'm sure I'll post it ;).

I think I am in a state of confusion. So the 89+ had the foot defroster option, but everything before that didn't?
You don't know for sure the climate control would function 100% from a 89+ into a pre-89?

89+ added the foot/defrost function. It will plug in and function correctly in your car, but the foot/defrost function will do nothing. This is because the wiring/components for that function are not in your car.

The second part of my post was just talking about what it would take to get the foot/defrost to work in a pre-89 car.

Okay thanks, sorry for my confusion.

Last question, is there any advantage of the 89+ climate control over the pre-89 climate control when you put it in a pre-89 car?
