what do you perfer? super charger or turbo, not only which but why, and which do you think is better? the super charger because its always on? or the turbo because it puts in more hp, but how much HP do you really need? anyways pick one.

turbo because why would i want to lose hp to gain it. and yes the turbo is not always on so i dont have to throw gas milage out the window.

turbo ftw... you dont have to change a gay pulley to raise boost... plus superchargers are just not what come in a supra... thats a big factor haha.. Anyway, a turbo is more efficient from my research ( of course in the top end i mean). Id trade in the little bit of lag any day for the knowledge that i have a turbo and not a stupor-charger. Plus a turbo sounds cooler! haha

Turbo is my choice, better power, more efficient, easier to deal with setup on the engine, and ya have a better sound not that gay supercharger that sounds like your PS just took a dump. If you read up turbo's are more effecient, make better power, risk of detonation is lower therefore allowing for more boost, and if you choose the right setup for your engine lag can be minimized and almost eliminated all together. TURBO FTW.

I come from a land down under
In a purely street car a Roots style Blower wins hands down for daily type driving instant power.

With a modern BB Turbo this gap is much smaller though.

Centrifugal SC's I have to ask "Why?" they have the downsides of both the Roots and the Turbo and just don't make a lot of sense.

turbo has many benefits:

it uses exhaust gasses to drive the turbine so it doesn't take power to make power

it doesn't displace accessories (ie, alt, ac compressor...)

it has only 1 moving part (2 if the wg is internal), so failure of a turbo is less likely

Koulee: Of course the Turbo takes power to make power.......

Otherwise it would be a perpetual motion machine and the World would be run on turbo motors.... it's just not as easily measured as a Blower for power consumption.

A centrifugal supercharger takes too long to make power. The only way to have instant power is a roots style supercharger, which is inefficient at higher rpm. The twin screw is much improved over the roots, but is costly in comparison. I prefer the load driven compressor to the belt driven.

In an ideal world.

the super charger because its always on? or the turbo because it puts in more hp,
If you add torque, you increase the work done, which is HP.

Nick: This is why I added in a real world street driven car ie: a daily driver that rarely see's the top end the Roots is simply stunning! :)

Way too many downsides to be a viable alternative without some serious engineering time spent on it.

The Shop that does my Axles makes a Screw type so I'll ask how much next time I'm there!

Electromagnetically-engaged roots-style!

None of the fuel economy loss that results from a constantly-on supercharger when cruising, but power right NOW when you want it.

Well, it really depends what you want, for my Supra, staying with the turbo. Large(ish) displacement, high weight, high load, good boost.

For my AE86, it's getting a 4A-GZE which is of course a 1.6L electromagnetically-engaged supercharged with 10.5psi and 170hp. Gets great gas milage, has nice torque from like 3000rpm, and can still take it to 7500rpm. Perfect for my car IMO, and is great all around. SC12 roots FTW ;).

(In conclusion: it depends on application, saying you prefer one over the other is kind of an odd statement to make).

jeff man your so right it does really depend on what you want from your car and what kinda of car it is. if it says supra it should say turbo across the back

In my previous company we had a job to repair the electronic controller that controls the electric turbo. Our customer used these electric turbos for truck racing. He had a couple of turbos...one pair was smaller and the other bigger. The compressor wheels were from the turbonetics To4e series i think. I cant remember now.

Anyway the customer could not pay his bill so he let my boss keep it. Scott a work mate put it on his m3 series bemmer. Car pulled alot more harder. He was happy with it. Later he sold his car and bought a Subara WRX STI.
I wish I couuld remember the schematics for the controller.

Cheers,
Roy

As usual, I went straight to reply after reading one or two responses.

Dedicated drag cars use a cogged CS due to the repeatability, and predictability. Although the turbo caught on strong in the 90's. I read recently about a stock body Mustang that ran 7.53 with the turbo. By stock body, I mean stock suspension locations, only upgraded pieces. Turbo, FTW.

The twin screw can be seen on the Ken Belle page. You might have seen them on some 03-04 Cobras were they changed the roots for the twin screw, and would lay down 500-600 hp at 15psi.
