As some of you know, my car developed a knock of some sort. I thought it was a rod at first, then the sound fluctuated and eventually went away totally. A few weeks ago it started again, so I parked it and took the cams out to check for valve issues as it sounded like the noise was coming from the head, not the block. Today I was taking out each bucket one at a time checking them for any defects, aside from normal 160,000 mile wear and tear, and making sure the shims were seated properly. The number 4, intake side bucket proved to be a little harder to pull out and push back in (had to use a mallet to get it seated) than the other ones.
My question: Is it possible that the bucket in question could somehow have gotten warped and is binding in the head and causing the knocking noise?
