struts for exhaust manifold...

Hi, people.
I need help. When I tried to tight exhaust manifold with new gasket (I was using 40 N-m, as TSRM says), some struts could not hold such force, and turned over...

I asked friend to fabricate new struts (12mm) - they seem can hold 40Nm, but it is scary a bit...

So there are 2 questions:
1). Did anybody have such problems with exhaust manifold struts?
2). How much should I tight my struts? Isn't 40Nm too much? May be it will be Ok with 30Nm? (new Toyota gasket)
Are there any opinions on the subject?

they always play up what ever you do in my opinion dont know what everyone else thinks as long as they are tight and not cross threaded youll be ok just my view
