Struggling with idle issues and backfiring

Background: Lexus/550 mod, AFPR, Walbro fuel pump, HKS BOV recirculating, complete 3 inch exhaust from turbo to muffler (TANABE CAT-back).

After changing old engine parts and setting the timing my idle issues with missing and sputtering have gone away.

Using a wideband oxygen sensor helped me to eliminate some of the backfiring.

I struggled with these issues for about a year now - the car ran but missed at idle and backfired between gears.

My questions:

Is it normal to hear what seems to be a muffler explosion? For example, it happens when I tap on the gas peddle when the car is running. Isn't this just back-pressure ? The sound is hard to describe typed in like this.

What PSI should my vacuum be? It is at 18 PSI at operating temperature. I thought 20 PSI was normal.

It really sounds like a leak doesn't it? I checked every hose, vacuum line and connection and everything is tight. Before I took half my engine apart last month my vacuum was at 17 to 18 PSI. That's exactly what it is at right now (hovers around 18) after reassembling the car. I even have 2 clamps in places - I mean things are really solid and tight.

Being a modified car, I suppose it is possible I have a vacuum line incorrectly placed somewhere?

Question: Can the EGR system cause this problem? EGR valve and lines to it, etc...

What about the cold start injector? - not only have I never replaced it; I don't even know where it is LOL...
